ROSEDALE, MARYLAND — A Maryland father has been sentenced to life in prison plus 185 years after being convicted in the Christmas Eve shooting that killed his 4-year-old son, Jacobi Jones.

The tragedy began on Dec. 24, 2024, when police responded to a shooting at an apartment complex in Rosedale.

Inside the home, officers found four people suffering from gunsH๏τ wounds, including two young children and their mother.

One of the children was 4-year-old Jacobi.

He was rushed to a hospital, but doctors were unable to save him. Jacobi was pronounced d*ad after the shooting.

His 1-year-old sister, Peyton, was also injured but survived. Their mother, Promyss Marcelle, was wounded as well.

Investigators identified Jacobi’s father, Mark Jones Jr., as the person responsible for the shooting.

According to prosecutors, the violence came after a troubled relationship between Jones and Marcelle. Investigators also examined messages exchanged before the shooting as they reconstructed the events leading up to the attack.

The case eventually went to trial.

On June 30, 2026, Jones was convicted of second-degree m*rder, child abuse and weapons-related offenses stemming from the shooting.

The conviction established criminal responsibility for the violence that claimed Jacobi’s life and injured two other members of the family.

Then, on Sept. 11, 2026, the court handed down the final sentence: life in prison plus 185 years.

For Jacobi’s loved ones, however, no sentence can change what happened on Christmas Eve.

He was only 4 years old.

Instead of spending the holiday surrounded by family, opening presents or making the kind of childhood memories that stay with a person for decades, Jacobi’s life ended in a burst of violence.

His little sister survived, as did his mother.

But both must now live with the loss of a child and brother who should have had decades ahead of him.

Jacobi should have gone to school, made friends, discovered the things he loved and grown into the person he was meant to become.

He should have had more Christmas mornings.

More birthdays.

More ordinary days with his family.

Instead, his loved ones are left holding memories of a little boy whose life ended far too soon.

The sentence may close one chapter of the criminal case, but it cannot restore what Jacobi’s family lost.

A 4-year-old child is gone.

And for those who loved him, he will always be more than the name of a victim in a court case.
