🚨 FOUND ALIVE AFTER 4½ YEARS — THE SHAWN HORNBECK CASE THAT SHOCKED AMERICA
At just 11 years old, Shawn Hornbeck disappeared in Missouri in October 2002.
For more than four years, his family had no idea where he was. Then, in January 2007, investigators searching for another missing boy, 13-year-old Ben Ownby, found both children alive inside Michael Devlin’s apartment in suburban St. Louis.
Shawn had been held by Devlin for approximately four and a half years. Court proceedings later revealed that he had endured prolonged abuse and that Devlin had threatened his life. Devlin ultimately pleaded guilty to numerous charges, including kidnapping, Sєxual ᴀssault and attempted murder, receiving multiple life sentences plus additional prison time.
The breakthrough came unexpectedly while investigators were pursuing Ben’s disappearance. When authorities entered Devlin’s apartment, they initially did not realize that the young man inside was the long-missing Shawn Hornbeck. His idenтιтy was confirmed only after investigators spoke with him.
After years of uncertainty, Shawn was finally reunited with his family.
His case remains a sobering reminder of how a missing-child investigation can change in an instant — and how important persistent investigative work can be when a child’s whereabouts remain unknown.
