💔 THE BABY WHO DESERVED A LIFETIME: REMEMBERING LEVI COLE ELLERBE

Some stories remain painful long after the courtroom proceedings have ended. For those who remember the case of Levi Cole Ellerbe, the most heartbreaking fact is also the simplest: Levi was only six months old.

He should have had years ahead of him—first steps, first words, birthdays, laughter and countless memories with the people who loved him. Instead, his short life became the center of a devastating case that shocked a community and left a family grieving a child they expected to watch grow up. 🕊️

On the night of July 17, 2018, Levi was inside his mother’s home when authorities were alerted that unknown individuals had reportedly entered the residence and that the infant had been taken.

A search began immediately. Multiple law-enforcement agencies worked to locate the missing baby, with the hope that he would be found alive and safely returned to his family.

That hope was shattered less than 90 minutes later.

Authorities were called to a fire near railroad tracks, where first responders discovered a baby who had suffered catastrophic injuries. The child was identified as Levi.

He was transported for emergency medical treatment, but despite efforts to save him, Levi died during the early morning hours of July 18.

He had lived for only six months.

Initially, investigators treated the case as a kidnapping. But as detectives examined the evidence, questions emerged about whether the reported events inside the home had occurred as originally described.

Investigators eventually alleged that the scene had been staged and began examining the relationship between people connected to Levi’s family.

Felicia Marie-Nicole Smith, who was known to the family, was eventually arrested. Prosecutors alleged that Smith took Levi from the home and brought him to an area near the railroad tracks, where the infant was intentionally harmed.

Authorities also alleged that Smith and Levi’s mother, Hanna Nicole Barker, knew one another and had a relationship. During court proceedings, testimony was presented concerning allegations that Barker had been involved in discussions surrounding harm to Levi.

Those claims were allegations presented during the legal process, rather than findings from a first-degree m*rder jury trial.

In 2021, Smith accepted a plea agreement. She pleaded guilty to reduced charges that included manslaughter, conspiracy to commit first-degree m*rder, and cruelty to a juvenile. She received an 80-year prison sentence without probation or suspension and agreed to cooperate and testify truthfully against Barker.

In 2022, Barker accepted an Alford plea to charges including manslaughter of a child under 10 and conspiracy to commit first-degree m*rder of a child under 12. Her sentences were ordered to run concurrently for a total of 30 years.

An Alford plea allows a defendant to accept a conviction while maintaining that they do not admit factual guilt. Barker maintained her innocence.

But beyond the legal documents and years of court proceedings, there is a little boy at the heart of the story.

Levi never got to grow up.

He never got to take those first steps his family was waiting for. He never spoke his first words, celebrated his first birthday, or discovered the life that should have been waiting for him.

His life lasted only six months, but his name continues to be remembered.
