At the same time, the discovery of human remains in the Tucson area briefly raised new speculation about whether they could be connected to the case, but authorities have said there is no known link.

Guthrie, 84, was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on the evening of January 31, 2026. She was reported missing the following day. The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been investigating her disappearance, which authorities have treated as a suspected kidnapping. The FBI continues to seek information that could lead to Guthrie’s location or to the identification and arrest of anyone involved.

One of the most important pieces of evidence released during the investigation is surveillance footage showing an armed, masked individual approaching Guthrie’s front door around the time she disappeared. The person appeared to tamper with the doorbell camera before moving away. Investigators have referred to the individual as a person of interest in the search for information, while the public has widely adopted the nickname “Porch Guy.” The FBI has released the footage and images in an effort to identify the individual.

The footage has generated extensive discussion about whether the person seen outside Guthrie’s home acted alone. Some commentators and former law-enforcement figures have raised the possibility that the individual may have had ᴀssistance or that other people could have been involved in the disappearance. However, those remain theories rather than conclusions reached publicly by investigators.

That distinction has become increasingly important as online speculation continues to surround the case. For Guthrie’s family, the uncertainty has continued for months. Her daughter, NBC “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, has repeatedly appealed for information and continued publicly calling for her mother’s return. In September, she again spoke emotionally about her family’s hope of bringing Nancy home, following a public tribute to her mother during the 2026 Emmy Awards.

The continuing focus on the “Porch Guy” footage reflects how central that evidence remains to the public understanding of the case. The FBI has confirmed that the footage shows an armed individual apparently tampering with the camera, but identifying the person and establishing exactly what happened afterward remain separate questions. Until investigators publicly establish otherwise, theories about accomplices, additional suspects or a connection to unrelated remains should be treated as unconfirmed.
