The most consequential detail in the Palm Beach County investigation involving Wade Wilson may be one that was not available when Detective Louis Potter closed the case. According to WFLX/WPTV, DNA had been collected during the investigation into allegations made by Kelly Matthews, but Potter closed the case 34 days later before the laboratory results came back. The later results indicated that Wilson’s DNA was present, yet the internal affairs review found that Potter did not follow up on those findings.

That sequence has become one of the defining facts in the renewed controversy. It is also one reason the case has attracted so much attention after Netflix’s “Worst Ex Ever” revisited it. The documentary’s first episode of Season 2, “Dating the ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool Killer,” focuses on Matthews’ relationship with Wilson and the events that followed. Netflix says the season uses survivor accounts, police interviews, body-camera footage and reenactments to explore cases involving dangerous relationships.

The underlying allegations were serious. Matthews told authorities that Wilson had ᴀssaulted her and described multiple injuries. WFLX/WPTV reported that evidence was collected from a vehicle connected to the investigation, while the internal review later determined that her account was supported by physical evidence and that investigators should have pursued additional steps. The internal affairs report also concluded that Potter failed to seek an arrest for dating violence and failed to conduct a thorough Sєx-crimes investigation.

But the case is complicated by the fact that Wilson denied the allegations and the police investigation did not automatically produce an arrest. PBSO has emphasized that detectives need probable cause before referring a case for prosecution. The internal affairs investigation, however, reached a different conclusion about the evidence available at the time and found significant investigative shortcomings. The later events gave the earlier investigation an importance nobody could have predicted at the time. Wilson was subsequently convicted of murdering Melton and Ruiz and sentenced to death in 2024. That is precisely why experts have cautioned against treating hindsight as proof of what a different decision would have produced.

The disciplinary outcome also provides an important part of the chronology. PBSO determined that Potter exercised poor discretionary judgment and did not follow established procedures. He was suspended without pay for 120 hours, reᴀssigned to administrative duties and later retired. The department has maintained that the internal review process addressed the concerns raised about his handling of the case.

The result is an unusually complicated true-crime timeline in which evidence, investigative decisions and later events intersect years after the original report. The DNA result did not arrive until after the file had been closed, and the later internal investigation examined why that result did not lead to further action. Netflix then brought the story to a much broader audience, prompting renewed public examination of the same chronology.
