⚖️ MELodee BUZZARD CASE SUSPENDED AS JUDGE ORDERS MENTAL COMPETENCY EVALUATIONS FOR HER MOTHER

Court proceedings against Ashlee Buzzard, the California mother accused of the *** of her 9-year-old daughter, Melodee Buzzard, have been suspended after her defense attorney raised concerns about whether Buzzard is mentally competent to continue participating in the case.

During a hearing Tuesday, Sept. 8, defense attorney Erica Sutherland formally declared a doubt regarding Buzzard’s competency. Judge Stephen Dunkle then suspended the criminal proceedings and canceled the preliminary hearing that had been scheduled for Sept. 16.

Two psychologists have now been appointed to evaluate the 40-year-old defendant. One expert was selected by the prosecution and the other by the defense. Their task is to determine whether Buzzard currently understands the criminal proceedings against her and is capable of working with her attorney to ᴀssist in her own defense. 🧠⚖️

The development does not mean the murder charge has been dismissed, nor does it mean Buzzard has been officially declared incompetent.

If the evaluations determine that Buzzard is competent, the criminal case can move forward. If she is found incompetent, proceedings would remain suspended while she receives treatment intended to restore her competency. She is expected to return to court on Oct. 5, when the judge and attorneys are expected to review the evaluations and decide the next steps.

The latest development comes nearly a year after Melodee’s disappearance triggered a mᴀssive investigation that crossed state lines.

Melodee was reported missing in October 2025 after a school administrator became concerned about her prolonged absence. Investigators later learned that Ashlee had taken her daughter on an extended road trip through multiple states before returning to California without Melodee.

Authorities said surveillance footage showed the mother and daughter wearing wigs during portions of the trip. Investigators also alleged that Ashlee changed license plates on the rental vehicle and backed into gas stations, behavior they said appeared intended to avoid surveillance cameras.

Melodee was last captured on video with her mother on Oct. 9 near the Colorado-Utah border. Authorities allege that she was *** shortly afterward.

The investigation took another devastating turn on Dec. 6, when decomposed human remains were discovered in a remote area near Caineville, Utah. Officials determined the remains belonged to a female who had suffered multiple *** wounds to the head.

Forensic evidence eventually connected the Utah scene to the Buzzard residence in California. Cartridge cases recovered near the remains were linked to an expended cartridge case previously found at the Buzzard home. FBI testing later confirmed that the remains were a familial DNA match to Ashlee Buzzard. 🧬

Ashlee was arrested on Dec. 23 and charged with first-degree murder in connection with her daughter’s death. Prosecutors have also alleged firearm use and that the *** involved lying in wait. Buzzard has pleaded not guilty and remains jailed without bail.

Prosecutors previously said they would not seek the death penalty. If Buzzard is convicted, they intend to seek life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

For Melodee’s family and those who have followed the case, the latest court decision means another delay in a case that has already brought months of uncertainty and grief.

The upcoming competency evaluations will now play a crucial role in determining what happens next. Until those evaluations are completed, the preliminary hearing will not proceed as originally scheduled.
