🦈 BROTHER’S COURAGE HELPED SAVE HER LIFE: TEEN SHARK ATTACK SURVIVOR WALKED AGAIN 99 DAYS LATER ❤️
KEATON BEACH, FLORIDA — What began as an ordinary summer day in the Florida waters became a terrifying fight for survival for 17-year-old Addison Bethea.
On June 30, 2022, Addison was enjoying a scalloping trip near Keaton Beach when a large shark suddenly attacked her.
The animal, estimated to be around nine feet long, grabbed Addison’s right leg and pulled her underwater.
In an instant, the peaceful afternoon became a desperate struggle.
Addison fought back with everything she had. She reached toward the shark’s gills and eyes, trying to force it to release her.
Then she screamed.
Her older brother, Rhett Willingham, heard her.
What happened next would become one of the most extraordinary parts of Addison’s survival story.
Rhett was a firefighter and emergency medical technician, but when he saw his younger sister in danger, his first instinct was not professional training.
It was to save his sister.
❤️ He moved toward the shark.
Rhett grabbed Addison and fought to separate her from the animal, repeatedly kicking toward it until they were able to escape.
Nearby boaters then rushed to help and pulled Addison onto a boat.
But the emergency was far from over.
Addison had suffered devastating injuries and was losing blood quickly.
That was when Rhett’s EMT training became critical.
He improvised a tourniquet around Addison’s injured leg to help control the bleeding and worked to keep her conscious while they raced back toward shore.
He talked to her.
He encouraged her.
And he refused to let her give up.
Addison was eventually airlifted to Tallahᴀssee Memorial HealthCare, where doctors immediately began working to save her leg.
The injuries, however, were extensive.
The attack had severely damaged the muscle in Addison’s thigh, including her quadriceps, as well as important nerves, blood vessels and surrounding tissue.
Doctors fought to preserve the limb, but the damage was ultimately too severe.
Six days after the attack, Addison underwent an above-the-knee amputation of her right leg.
💔 For a teenager, such a life-changing moment could have shattered every expectation she had for her future.
Instead, Addison decided that surviving the attack would be only the beginning of her story.
She faced the long road of recovery with determination.
She had to learn new ways of moving, adapt to a prosthetic leg and rebuild her confidence after experiencing a traumatic event that could have left her afraid to return to the water or even afraid of the world around her.
But Addison kept going.
Step by step.
Day by day.
She transformed her recovery into a story about resilience rather than limitation.
And then came a moment that captured just how far she had come.
🦿 Ninety-nine days after the attack, Addison walked again.
The number represented far more than a milestone.
It represented 99 days of rehabilitation, frustration, courage, adaptation and refusing to surrender to what had happened.
Her brother’s actions had helped give her the chance to survive that terrifying afternoon.
Her own determination helped carry her through everything that came afterward.
❤️ Addison’s story is ultimately about more than a shark encounter.
It is about family.
It is about instinct.
It is about the extraordinary bond between siblings.
And it is about what can happen when someone refuses to let the worst moment of their life become the final chapter.
Rhett saw his sister in danger and went toward her.
Addison survived the attack and then went even further — she rebuilt her life.
🦈 Her life changed in seconds.
But her courage changed what came next.
And 99 days later, she took another step forward. ❤️🦿🙏
