LIE DETECTOR CLAIMS RESURFACE IN NANCY GUTHRIE CASE — WHAT DO THE POLYGRAPHS REALLY TELL US?

A reported development from earlier in the Nancy Guthrie investigation has resurfaced: members of the Guthrie family were reportedly given polygraph examinations and were said to have pᴀssed them “with flying colors.” The claim was made publicly in March by former SWAT team leader Chad Ayers, who said he was relying on a source familiar with the investigation.

The reported testing involved Nancy’s close relatives, including her daughter Savannah, her other children and their spouses. At the time, Ayers also claimed that investigators did not have a solid suspect, although that portion of his account was based on an unnamed source rather than an official law-enforcement announcement.

Importantly, the polygraph reports should not be interpreted as proof that investigators have solved anything. Polygraph examinations measure physiological responses to questions and are generally considered an investigative tool rather than definitive proof of truthfulness. Their reliability and courtroom admissibility can also be limited.

More importantly, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office had already publicly stated that Nancy’s family members had been cleared as possible suspects. Sheriff Chris Nanos described the family as cooperative and emphasized that they were victims in the case.

That means the reported polygraph results do not necessarily represent a sudden new breakthrough. Instead, they reinforce an important point about the investigation: attention has increasingly shifted away from Nancy’s family and toward identifying whoever may have been responsible for her disappearance.

Nancy, 84, disappeared from her Tucson-area home in February 2026. Investigators have examined surveillance footage, forensic evidence and ransom-related communications, but she has still not been found and authorities have not publicly identified a confirmed suspect.

For Savannah and the rest of Nancy’s family, being publicly cleared does not bring the answer they want most. The central mystery remains unchanged: Who took Nancy, where is she now, and what happened after she disappeared?
