💔👶 “IT’S JUST CONSTIPATION” — THE SWOLLEN STOMACH THAT LED TO A DEVASTATING CANCER DIAGNOSIS
For Anna Chattaway and Dom Wilde, the first signs that something was wrong with their young daughter seemed easy to explain.
But as their little girl became increasingly unwell, a mother’s instincts told her that something much more serious was happening.
Their daughter, Florence, was just one year old when her parents began noticing changes in her health. She was unusually tired, frequently unwell and no longer seemed like the happy little girl they knew. Then they noticed something particularly concerning: her stomach had begun to swell. 💔
At first, Anna and Dom sought medical advice, hoping doctors could explain why their daughter’s abdomen was becoming larger.
Instead, they were repeatedly told that Florence was suffering from constipation.
The family was reᴀssured and Florence was prescribed laxatives. Her parents followed the advice, hoping the treatment would solve the problem.
But Florence did not improve.
Her stomach continued to grow, and she appeared increasingly uncomfortable. She cried in pain and struggled to sleep on her own. Some nights, her mother had to hold her upright in her arms simply so Florence could get some rest. 😢
For Anna, watching her daughter suffer was heartbreaking.
She recalled spending three weeks trying to give Florence laxatives, despite how difficult the experience was for both mother and child.
Still, something inside Anna told her that constipation could not explain everything that was happening.
Her daughter was getting worse, not better.
Anna and Dom returned to their GP several times. They explained that Florence was not improving and repeatedly expressed their concerns.
Yet they continued to receive reᴀssurance that constipation was the likely explanation.
At one point, Anna recalled being told by a doctor: “Let’s address the elephant in the room, we don’t think it’s cancer.”
Those words would later become especially heartbreaking.
Because Florence’s parents were eventually faced with the diagnosis they had feared.
Their little girl had cancer. 💔
What had initially appeared to be a common childhood problem had been masking something far more serious.
For Anna and Dom, the experience was filled with fear, frustration and the desperate need to understand what was happening to their daughter. They had repeatedly sought help because they knew Florence was not herself.
The swelling in her stomach was continuing.
Her behavior had changed.
She was tired, unwell and in pain.
And her parents knew something was wrong.
Florence’s story highlights just how frightening it can be for parents when their child develops symptoms that do not improve. It also shows the importance of continuing to seek medical advice when concerns persist and communicating clearly with healthcare professionals about changes in a child’s condition.
For Anna, the strongest message is perhaps the simplest one:
A parent knows their child.
When something feels different, that concern deserves to be heard.
Florence was only one year old when her family’s world changed. Instead of spending her days carefree and healthy, she and her parents were suddenly facing a frightening medical journey no family expects.
But her story is also one of a family refusing to stop searching for answers.
💔 Sometimes the symptom that seems ordinary is the one that deserves another question.
🙏 Please send love and strength to Florence, Anna and Dom as they continue their journey.
