Tragic Loss: Toddler’s Life Cut Short by E. Coli After Dream Stay at 5-Star Egypt Resort

A family vacation is meant to create lifelong memories filled with joy, laughter, and wonder. For Jade Oakes and Lee Mann, however, what began as a once-in-a-lifetime all-inclusive trip to Egypt in December 2025 turned into an unimaginable heartbreak that no parent should ever face.

The British couple, along with their one-year-old daughter Ariella and her older sister Summer, had carefully planned a two-week getaway at the luxurious Jaz Makadi Aquaviva H๏τel in Hurghada. Booked through TUI UK Limited for more than £6,000 (over $8,000), the trip promised sun-soaked relaxation and beautiful moments by the Red Sea. The family arrived on December 21 and spent the first week enjoying the resort’s five-star facilities and family-friendly amenities.

But during the second week, everything changed. Little Ariella suddenly fell seriously ill with severe vomiting, diarrhea, high fever, and dehydration. Concerned for her health, her parents made the difficult decision to cut their holiday short and return home to the United Kingdom on January 5. Upon arrival, Ariella’s condition continued to deteriorate rapidly. On January 7, her family called emergency services, and she was rushed to the hospital, where doctors admitted her to the intensive care unit and placed her in a medically induced coma.

Medical teams diagnosed Ariella with hemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a rare and serious complication often linked to E. coli infection. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, Ariella’s condition did not improve. On January 10, the family’s worst fears were realized when their precious daughter pᴀssed away.

Jade Oakes later shared through her legal team: “We went to Egypt expecting to make happy memories with our little girl, but instead it became the worst time of our lives.” The pain of returning home to Ariella’s unopened Christmas presents and facing each day without her has been overwhelming. Lee has been unable to return to work, and both parents describe their daily struggle simply to get out of bed while supporting each other through their grief.

Ariella was remembered by her mother as “a special, inquisitive and loving little girl, and the best daughter and little sister anyone could have wished for.” The family has expressed that the loss has changed them forever, and they will carry her memory in their hearts always.

This heartbreaking case is not an isolated incident at the Jaz Makadi Aquaviva H๏τel. According to statements from the family’s legal representatives at Irwin Mitchell, two other young children also reportedly contracted E. coli after stays at the same resort. In August 2025, six-year-old Arthur Broughton developed similar symptoms, and in 2024, two-year-old Chloe Crook faced the same serious illness. Thankfully, both children survived, but their families endured frightening ordeals. All three families had booked their holidays through TUI UK Limited.

Lawyer Jatinder Paul from Irwin Mitchell commented: “While nothing can undo the ordeal these families have suffered, our focus is now on helping to provide them with the answers they deserve and either the specialist support they require to come to terms with their loss or the specialist rehabilitation two of these children now need.”

The families are now seeking a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding these incidents. They hope that by speaking out, they can help ensure safer conditions for future guests and prevent any other family from experiencing similar pain.

Spending thousands on a luxury all-inclusive holiday at a highly rated resort should offer peace of mind and high standards of safety. When multiple reports of the same serious illness emerge from the same location, many questions naturally arise about hygiene practices, water quality, and food handling standards. Ariella’s family, supported by their legal team, is determined to find those answers — not only for their daughter’s memory but also to protect other traveling families.

In the face of such profound loss, the courage of Ariella’s parents to share their story stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of accountability in the travel industry. Their hope is that this tragedy leads to meaningful changes so that no other child’s holiday ends in heartbreak.

Ariella may no longer be here to create new memories, but her story continues to shine a light on the need for vigilance and responsibility whenever families place their trust — and their loved ones — in the hands of holiday providers. The family’s fight for answers honors her short but beautiful life and may help spare others from similar sorrow.
