Nearly two decades after the disappearance of his older sister Madeleine McCann, Sean McCann has stepped into the international spotlight in a very different way — representing Scotland in swimming at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Sean, now 21, was only two years old when Madeleine disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007. Since then, the case has remained one of the world’s most closely followed missing-person investigations. Sean and his twin sister, Amelie, have largely grown up away from the public spotlight, but Sean has developed a successful career in compeтιтive swimming.

Selected for Scotland’s Commonwealth Games team, Sean competed in the men’s 400-metre freestyle in Glasgow. He advanced to the final and ultimately finished eighth, marking an important milestone in his young international career. He later described the experience as a nervous but memorable moment, particularly with a large home crowd watching him compete.

Swimming has been an important part of Sean’s life since childhood. He began with triathlon at around eight years old before becoming increasingly focused on swimming. He later joined the City of Leicester swimming program and progressed through national-level compeтιтion. He previously represented Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, where he competed in the 400m and 1500m freestyle events. He has also been involved in open-water swimming and has set his sights on reaching the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Sean’s appearance in Glasgow attracted considerable attention because of his family history, but the focus surrounding his Commonwealth Games debut has largely remained on his sporting achievement. His parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, and his twin sister Amelie were present to support him during the compeтιтion, creating an emotional family moment nearly 20 years after Madeleine’s disappearance.

The attention comes at a particularly significant time for the McCann family. Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007, while on holiday with her parents and siblings in Praia da Luz. Although the investigation has continued for years and German authorities have identified Christian Brückner as a suspect, Madeleine has never been found. Brückner has denied involvement in her disappearance, and there has been no conviction establishing what happened to Madeleine.

For Sean, however, the Commonwealth Games represented something separate from the long-running investigation: an opportunity to compete at the highest level in front of a home Scottish audience. His eighth-place finish in the 400m freestyle final may not have resulted in a medal, but reaching a Commonwealth Games final at just 21 represents a significant achievement.

His journey is also continuing. With international experience now added to his record, Sean is looking toward future compeтιтions and the possibility of qualifying for the 2028 Olympics. For a young athlete who has spent much of his life in the shadow of an internationally known family tragedy, his performance in Glasgow offered a rare opportunity for the public to see him defined not by the disappearance of his sister, but by his own dedication, ambition and sporting career.
