Nearly two decades after three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, her case remains one of the world’s most closely followed unsolved mysteries. While many questions remain unanswered, investigators across Europe continue working to uncover what happened.

In early June 2025, Portuguese and German authorities carried out a new joint search in Portugal’s Algarve region. The operation focused on land surrounding a cottage previously linked to the investigation’s main suspect, German national Christian Brueckner. Search teams examined abandoned buildings, dense vegetation, wells, and drainage areas, using ground-penetrating radar capable of detecting objects deep beneath the surface. Requested by German prosecutors, the multi-day operation involved around 25 German investigators but did not result in any publicly announced major discoveries.

Brueckner, whose mobile phone records placed him near the McCann family’s holiday apartment on the night Madeleine disappeared, has consistently denied any involvement. German prosecutors identified him as the prime suspect in 2020, stating they believe he was responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance. However, he has never been formally charged in connection with the case.

At the time of the 2025 searches, Brueckner was serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz. He completed that sentence and was released from Sehnde Prison on September 17, 2025. Following his release, authorities fitted him with an electronic ankle monitor, while his legal team declined to reveal where he would be living.

Throughout 2026, the investigation has gained renewed momentum. During June and July, detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Grange received a substantial collection of files from German authorities. According to reports, the material contains significant new information and evidence relating to Brueckner. British investigators are now exploring legal options to extradite him to the United Kingdom, where they hope he could face charges connected to Madeleine’s disappearance and suspected death before the 20th anniversary of the case in May 2027.

Brueckner continues to deny any role in Madeleine’s disappearance. Differences between German and British legal standards—particularly regarding the use of circumstantial evidence—have so far prevented prosecutors in Germany from bringing charges. Nevertheless, investigators say they remain committed to pursuing every credible lead.

Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have repeatedly reaffirmed their determination to find answers, saying they will continue to “leave no stone unturned” in their search for the truth.
