A case that stunned both the public and television audiences ended with a life sentence for Ariel Robinson, the Season 20 winner of Food Network’s Worst Cooks in America. Robinson was convicted of homicide by child abuse in connection with the death of her 3-year-old foster daughter, Victoria “Tori” Smith.

The heartbreaking events unfolded in Simpsonville, South Carolina. On January 14, 2021, emergency responders rushed to the family’s home after young Tori was found unresponsive. She was taken to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, she could not be saved. Investigators later concluded that the child had suffered multiple blunt-force injuries. Ariel Robinson and her husband, Jerry “Austin” Robinson, were both arrested and charged in relation to the case.

During the Greenville County trial in May 2022, prosecutors argued that Ariel Robinson was responsible for inflicting the fatal injuries. Taking the witness stand in her own defense, Robinson denied the allegations, claiming she had been away running errands the previous evening and returned the next morning to find Tori suddenly collapse after breakfast. She suggested that her husband was responsible. After approximately 90 minutes of deliberation, the jury rejected her version of events and found her guilty of homicide by child abuse.

At sentencing, Judge Leтιтia H. Verdin described the evidence as some of the most disturbing she had encountered during more than a decade on the bench. She expressed concern that medical ᴀssistance was not sought sooner while the child was in critical condition and concluded that a life sentence was the only appropriate punishment.

Jerry Austin Robinson had previously pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting homicide by child abuse. As part of a cooperation agreement, he testified against his wife and was later sentenced to the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, with credit for time already served.

The case received widespread attention because of Ariel Robinson’s brief television career. She won the 2020 season of Worst Cooks in America, a cooking compeтιтion that helps inexperienced cooks improve their culinary skills. Following the criminal charges, Food Network and its parent company removed the entire season featuring Robinson from their streaming platforms.
