📰🚌💙 Seven-Year-Old Ally Rednour’s School Bus Accident Led to Years of Recovery and Lasting Change

What began as an ordinary ride home from school became a life-changing event for 7-year-old Ally Rednour, a first-grade student in Louisville, Kentucky, whose story continues to highlight the importance of school transportation safety.

On the afternoon of May 15, 2015, Ally stepped off her Jefferson County Public Schools bus near her babysitter’s home, expecting a routine end to the school day.

According to court records, her backpack strap became caught in the closing bus door as she exited. Unaware that the child had not fully cleared the vehicle, the driver pulled away.

Surveillance video later presented during legal proceedings showed the bus continuing down the road for more than 1,000 feet before coming to a stop. Officials said the bus stopped only after a pᴀssing motorist, Matthew Lundergan, noticed something was wrong, drove ahead of the vehicle, sounded his horn repeatedly, and safely blocked its path.

Emergency responders transported Ally to Kosair Children’s Hospital, where she was treated for extensive injuries.

Although she was discharged within two days, the long-term effects proved far more significant.

According to her attorney, Ally was left with 35 permanent scars, nerve damage that continues to cause chronic pain, and later received a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Following an internal review, Jefferson County Public Schools determined that the driver had failed to properly monitor Ally’s exit from the bus as required by district safety procedures. The driver was dismissed from her position. Authorities did not pursue criminal charges.

Ally’s mother, Amy Ehman, later filed a civil lawsuit against both the school district and the driver, seeking accountability for the injuries her daughter sustained.

The legal case continued for several years before reaching trial in July 2021. Shortly before the jury was scheduled to begin deliberations, both sides reached a settlement.

Court documents later showed that the district’s insurer agreed to a structured settlement valued at $4.8 million, with payments extending through the year 2088.

By the time of the settlement, Ally was 13 years old. Looking back on the incident, she described how just 53 seconds permanently changed the course of her life.

Today, her story is shared not only as a reminder of the challenges she has overcome but also as an important lesson about the responsibility of protecting children during every step of their journey to and from school.

Supporters say Ally’s courage throughout years of treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery continues to inspire others facing difficult circumstances.
