Brian Shaffer: The Medical Student Who Vanished from a Bar Full of Cameras – Back Door or Impossible Disappearance?

On the night of March 31–April 1, 2006, 27-year-old Ohio State University medical student Brian Shaffer celebrated the end of midterms with friends in Columbus. He never made it home. More than 20 years later, his disappearance from the crowded Ugly Tuna Saloona remains one of America’s strangest missing-person cases—captured on camera entering the bar, but never seen leaving.

Shaffer, a second-year med student known for his easygoing nature and Pearl Jam tattoo, met best friend Clint Florence for drinks. They bar-hopped before returning to the Ugly Tuna Saloona around 1:15 a.m. with Florence’s friend Meredith Reed. Surveillance footage clearly shows the trio riding the escalator up to the second-floor entrance and entering the bustling venue.

Roughly 40 minutes later, at about 1:55 a.m., cameras captured Shaffer outside the main entrance, casually chatting with two women he had just met—Brightan Zatko and Amber Ruic. He said goodbye, turned, and walked back toward the bar’s entrance, disappearing from view. That was the last confirmed image of him.

When the bar closed, Florence and Reed searched inside but couldn’t find Shaffer. They ᴀssumed he had slipped out or gone home. No one at the bar reported seeing him leave. Police later reviewed all available footage: Shaffer entered the building, but there was zero video of him exiting through the main door, side exits, or any other camera-covered route.

The Ugly Tuna had multiple exits, including a construction-area door and a back staircase, some of which lacked full camera coverage. Still, the complete absence of any departure footage—despite the bar being packed and monitored—has baffled investigators. Shaffer’s phone, wallet, and personal items were never recovered in a way that clarified his exit.

No signs of struggle, no ransom demand, and no body have ever surfaced. Theories range from an accidental fall into nearby construction zones, a quiet “Irish goodbye” via an uncovered exit, or something more sinister. His father Randy’s tireless search ended with his own death from cancer in 2008; Shaffer’s brother Derek died in a 2018 car crash.

Two decades on, the grainy footage of Brian walking toward that entrance—and never reappearing—continues to haunt. Did he slip out undetected, or did the bar itself swallow him whole? The cameras keep their silent vigil, but answers remain elusive.
