1,000-Year-Old Peruvian Mummy with Perfectly Preserved Hair Unearthed in Lima – Chancay or Ychsma Culture?
Archaeologists have announced the discovery of a remarkably intact 1,000-year-old mummy in metropolitan Lima, Peru, featuring exceptionally well-preserved long, dark hair still attached to the skull — one of the best-preserved examples of pre-Inca funerary practice ever found in an urban context.

The mummy, recovered in March 2025 during rescue excavations at the Huaca Pucllana archaeological site in the Miraflores district, belongs to the Late Intermediate Period (circa 1000–1200 CE). The individual — an adult woman approximately 25–35 years old — was buried in a flexed, seated position inside a large reed basket, wrapped in layers of fine cotton textiles and accompanied by ceramic offerings. The hair, measuring over 60 cm in length, remains attached to the scalp with natural oils and pigments still visible, a rarity for mummies of this age in coastal environments.
Researchers from Peru’s Ministry of Culture and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru are still debating whether the burial belongs to the Chancay culture (centered north of Lima) or the local Ychsma (Ichsma) culture that dominated the Lima valley. Textile patterns and pottery styles show mixed influences from both traditions, suggesting cultural interaction or trade along the central coast.

“This is an extraordinary find,” said lead archaeologist Dr. Lucía Watson. “The preservation of the hair allows us to study diet, health, and even possible hairstyles of the time through microscopic and chemical analysis.” CT scans reveal no signs of trauma and indicate the woman was likely of high status.
The discovery underscores how pre-Inca coastal societies maintained sophisticated mummification and ancestor veneration practices right up to the edge of the Inca Empire. As further studies proceed, this Lima mummy promises to clarify the cultural boundaries between Chancay and Ychsma in the heart of modern Peru.
