During a routine two-month checkup, a temporary pediatrician reviewed Mattie’s medical records and noticed that her growth in both height and weight was not progressing as expected.

The doctor immediately advised Allison and Michael to take their daughter to the emergency room.

“They obviously knew something that my husband and I did not about our little peanut,” Allison later recalled.

At the hospital, doctors began conducting tests. Specialists soon raised concerns about biliary atresia, a rare and potentially life-threatening liver condition affecting newborns.

For Mattie’s parents, the diagnosis was frightening because they had never even heard of the condition before.

Biliary atresia occurs when the bile ducts are blocked or damaged, preventing bile from flowing normally from the liver. As bile builds up, it can cause progressive liver damage and, without treatment, eventually lead to liver failure.

Suddenly, the tiny baby who appeared to be simply struggling to grow was facing a serious fight for survival. 😢

As doctors explained the condition, Allison and Michael began to understand just how dangerous Mattie’s situation had become.

The family later expressed concerns that critical treatment had not occurred as early as they believed it should have. They said the Kasai procedure, an operation intended to restore bile flow and commonly performed early in babies with biliary atresia, was not completed within the ideal timeframe.

From there, Mattie’s medical journey became extraordinarily difficult.

She would eventually need a life-saving liver transplant.
