A heartbreaking trip to buy a new pair of soccer boots ended in tragedy after 9-year-old James Lachlan Edds died from injuries sustained in a serious crash on the Central Coast of New South Wales.

According to authorities, James was traveling with his mother, Anastasia, on Wednesday afternoon to purchase new soccer boots using his Christmas money. What should have been a joyful outing instead became a devastating event that has left a family and community mourning the loss of a beloved young boy.

Police allege that the family’s sedan was struck by a Lexus SUV driven by 51-year-old Kristie Fiona Anne Merrett, who reportedly failed to stop at a give-way sign before the collision.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene in Killarney Vale, where they found James trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle. Rescue personnel worked to free him before he was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle in critical condition. His mother sustained minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital for treatment.

Despite several days of intensive medical care, James died from his injuries on Saturday.

The heartbreaking news was shared by his aunt, Nicole Micos, who paid tribute to her nephew on social media. She described James as an “incredible little legend” whose joyful spirit touched everyone around him.

Nicole also thanked the doctors, nurses, and emergency responders who fought tirelessly to save his life.

Family members remembered James as a kind, energetic, and adventurous child who loved soccer, spending time with friends, jumping on the trampoline, and playing board games such as Monopoly and Uno with his father. His love for his family’s traditions, including enjoying his grandmother’s homemade cheese pie, was among the many cherished memories shared following his pᴀssing.

Teachers and school staff also remembered James as a bright student whose friendly personality brought warmth and happiness to those around him. Counseling services have since been made available to students and staff as the school community mourns his loss.

According to New South Wales Police, Kristie Merrett allegedly recorded a breath analysis reading of 0.197, nearly four times Australia’s legal driving limit of 0.05. She has been charged with aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, high-range drink-driving, and possession of a prohibited drug. Authorities also reported that her driver’s license had been suspended at the time of the crash.

Police have confirmed they are reviewing the charges following James’s death, and further legal proceedings remain ongoing.
