๐ฅบ๐ DOCTORS DIDNโT EXPECT HIM TO SURVIVE โ BUT BABY BENTLEY KEPT FIGHTING, AND NOW HEโS SMILING, EATING, AND GROWING ๐๐
Before little Bentley Yoder was even born, his parents were warned that his future might be heartbreakingly short.
Bentley was diagnosed before birth with encephalocele, an extremely rare condition in which part of the brain develops outside the skull. Doctors feared that if he survived delivery, he might have severe neurological problems and little or no cognitive function. ๐
His parents, Sierra and Dustin Yoder, were given an impossible decision.
At one point, they were advised to consider ending the pregnancy because doctors believed Bentley might not survive after birth.
But on the day they were scheduled to make that decision, his parents changed their minds.
They wanted to meet their son.
Even if they only had an hour with him, they wanted that hour.

They wanted to hold him.
To see him.
To know him.
And on October 31, Bentley was born. ๐ถโค๏ธ
Doctors didn’t expect him to live for long.
But 36 hours pแดssed.
Then another day.
And Bentley was still fighting.
His family was advised to consider hospice care, and the little boy was hospitalized several times with respiratory illness and lung infections.
There were still so many uncertainties.
But Bentley continued to surprise everyone. ๐๐
Then, four months later, doctors discovered something they hadn’t expected.
Bentley appeared to be using the portion of his brain that was outside his skull.
His family traveled to Boston Children’s Hospital, where specialists determined that a significant portion of Bentley’s brain was contained in the external sac.
Unlike what doctors had initially feared, it appeared to be functioning.
That changed everything. ๐ฅน
Instead of simply removing the tissue, surgeons began planning an incredibly complex operation to create enough room inside Bentley’s skull for his brain to be brought back inside.
They even used 3-D printed models to carefully plan and practice the procedure before operating on the tiny baby. ๐ฅโจ
On May 24, Bentley underwent the surgery.

The operation lasted approximately five hours.
And then his parents finally saw their little boy again.
Bandaged and wearing a tiny hospital gown, Bentley looked up at his parents, grandparents, and his big brother, Beau.
He was awake.
He was looking around.
And, according to his mother, he wasn’t even particularly upset.
He was simply taking everything in. ๐ฅน๐
A month after the operation, Bentley was already showing encouraging progress.
He could hold his head up.
He was eating.
He was smiling.
He was making little sounds and babbling.
And most importantly, he was still here. ๐โค๏ธ
At seven months old, his future was beginning to look much brighter than anyone had imagined before his birth.
Doctors told his parents they believed Bentley could go on to have a rewarding life, with his progress continuing one step at a time. ๐
For Sierra and Dustin, that must have been an extraordinary moment.
Before Bentley was born, they were preparing themselves for the possibility that they might only have moments with their baby.
Instead, they were watching him smile.
Watching him grow.
Watching him discover the world.
Watching him become the little boy they had always hoped he could be. โค๏ธ
Bentley’s journey is a reminder that sometimes the beginning of a story doesn’t tell us how the story will end.
His parents were told to expect the worst.
But Bentley kept showing them something different.
โจ He kept fighting.
โจ He kept growing.
โจ He kept surprising everyone.
And today, the little boy who wasn’t expected to survive past birth is smiling, eating, babbling, and taking his next steps into a future his family once feared they might never see. ๐ฅน๐
๐ Bentley’s story isn’t about what doctors thought he couldn’t do. It’s about everything this brave little boy has already shown them he can do.
May he continue to grow stronger, reach new milestones, and fill his family’s lives with many more smiles and beautiful moments. ๐โค๏ธ๐ถ
