The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy took an emotional turn as several first responders described the heartbreaking scene they encountered at the family’s Duxbury, Mᴀssachusetts, home on January 24, 2023.

Among the witnesses was Police Officer Stephen Hall, an 11-year veteran of the force, who became visibly emotional while recounting what he saw that evening. At one point during his testimony, Hall paused, removed his glᴀsses, and wiped away tears before continuing.

Hall told jurors he heard Patrick Clancy desperately shouting, “I can’t wake them up!” as officers entered the home. He and his partner rushed to the basement, where they found the couple’s 3-year-old son, Dawson, unresponsive on the floor.

Hall testified that the child showed no signs of movement, and he and his partner immediately carried him outside to waiting paramedics before returning inside to search for the family’s other two children.

According to testimony, they then found 5-year-old Cora and 8-month-old Callan also unresponsive. Officer Brian Josephine recalled hearing Patrick cry out in disbelief as the tragic reality unfolded.

Lindsay Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, is accused of using exercise resistance bands to fatally strangle her three children before attempting to take her own life. She survived after jumping from a second-story window but was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Her defense team does not dispute that she caused the children’s deaths. Instead, attorneys argue she was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis and was unable to appreciate the nature or wrongfulness of her actions because of an acute mental health crisis, which they contend was worsened by multiple prescribed medications.

Officer Josephine also described the children’s condition when they were discovered, telling jurors they showed clear signs of severe injury. He said Patrick appeared overwhelmed with shock and grief as emergency crews worked throughout the home.

In total, prosecutors called nine first responders to testify about the events that unfolded after emergency crews arrived shortly after 6 p.m.

Witnesses also described finding Lindsay Clancy outside the home with serious injuries, drifting in and out of consciousness while emergency personnel rushed to treat everyone at the scene.

Duxbury Fire Department Captain PJ Hussey testified that the situation became chaotic almost immediately, requiring multiple ambulances because four people needed urgent medical attention at the same time.

Paramedic Jennifer Stratton testified that she focused her efforts on infant Callan, performing lifesaving measures before carrying him to the ambulance when attempts to restore his pulse were unsuccessful.

Earlier in the trial, jurors listened to Patrick Clancy’s emotional 911 call and viewed physical evidence recovered from the home, including the children’s pajamas and the exercise bands prosecutors allege were used in the killings.

Throughout Thursday’s proceedings, Lindsay Clancy remained seated in a wheelchair with her head lowered and hands clasped in front of her.

Patrick Clancy has previously testified that, in the months before the tragedy, his wife sought treatment from multiple medical providers and was prescribed numerous psychiatric medications while struggling with worsening mental health symptoms. Court testimony indicated she had also been hospitalized twice after experiencing suicidal thoughts.

The trial is expected to continue with additional testimony, and jurors are scheduled to visit the Duxbury home where the deaths occurred as the case moves forward.
