Nearly six months after 84-year-old Nancy Long Guthrie disappeared from her home in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson, Arizona, the investigation remains one of the most closely followed missing-person cases in the United States.

Nancy, the mother of NBC Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing in the early hours of February 1, 2026. Investigators have said evidence found at the residence suggested she may have been abducted rather than leaving voluntarily.

Authorities reported finding blood near the home’s entrance, while doorbell camera footage allegedly captured a masked individual at the property. Investigators also noted that Nancy left behind her mobile phone and essential medications, heightening concerns for her well-being from the very beginning of the search.

In the days following her disappearance, two messages were reportedly sent to media outlets and members of the Guthrie family.

The first demanded a multimillion-dollar cryptocurrency ransom, reportedly between $4 million and $6 million in Bitcoin, in exchange for Nancy’s safe return. The message included strict ᴅᴇᴀᴅlines and claimed she would be released at a location in Tucson if the payment was made.

A second communication, which investigators reportedly traced to the same electronic source, presented a much more troubling claim. According to reports, the message stated that Nancy had died shortly after being taken, described her death as unintended, expressed regret to the family, and claimed she had been buried in a remote natural area.

Authorities have treated both messages as potentially connected to the ongoing investigation while continuing to verify every aspect of the information they contain.

The case remains under joint investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI. Detectives continue to examine forensic evidence collected from the scene, including complex DNA samples believed to involve multiple individuals, along with hair samples and other physical evidence.

Although investigators have not publicly identified a suspect, officials have emphasized that advances in forensic and genetic analysis continue to offer possible avenues for future breakthroughs.

Throughout the investigation, Savannah Guthrie has publicly appealed for anyone with information about her mother’s disappearance to come forward. The family has continued to express hope while acknowledging the emotional uncertainty created by the conflicting messages received during the investigation.
