💔 A Seven-Year-Old’s Final Bike Ride: Remembering Max Rothschild

Seven-year-old Max Rothschild had recently accomplished something that filled him with enormous pride: he had learned to ride a bicycle. 🚲

For Max, it was more than simply learning a new skill. His family said he was incredibly proud of himself and had been practicing because they were planning a longer bike ride during an upcoming family vacation. It was supposed to be another adventure for a little boy who loved exploring, learning and challenging himself.

Instead, the family’s plans were shattered.

On Friday evening in Williamstown, Mᴀssachusetts, Max was riding his bicycle when he unintentionally entered Main Street and was struck by a vehicle, according to the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office. Authorities said Max was wearing a helmet at the time. They also said the driver was not impaired by alcohol or drugs. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.

In the days following the tragedy, friends, teachers, coaches and family members have focused on remembering who Max was — a remarkably bright, confident and adventurous child whose personality seemed far bigger than his seven years. 💙

His family described him as someone who knew exactly what he wanted. During preschool, his confidence and personality earned him the affectionate nickname “the mayor of the school.” 👑

Max loved almost anything that allowed him to learn, compete or explore. He enjoyed swimming, skiing, soccer, baseball, football, golf, math and chess. He attended chess camp and was recently named “player of the day” during the final day of soccer camp. The night before the incident, he proudly told his family that he had won two compeтιтions at his golf clinic.

Adventure was also at the heart of Max’s personality. He loved ropes courses, ziplines, hiking and climbing over rocks. Family trips to Vermont were especially memorable, with pizza, arcade games and skiing through trees and over moguls. 🏔️❤️

Those who knew him through sports and community programs remembered him as energetic, determined and kind. His swim teacher recalled a child who was always eager to learn and be challenged. Friends remembered his love of baseball, soccer and football, as well as his ability to be a genuinely fun friend.

Above all, Max was a beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend. He leaves behind his parents, Laura Kaufman and Adam Rothschild, his siblings Caleb and Ellie, and a community grieving an extraordinary little boy.

“Max brought so much joy and love into all our lives,” his family wrote.

Their final words capture the heartbreak best:
