Nolan’s family believes the device could contain important information about his final hours, but as of the latest reporting, the phone had still not undergone the agreed forensic examination because of a dispute over how that review should be conducted. The possibility of involving the FBI or a digital-forensics laboratory has also been discussed.

Meanwhile, members of Congress and Nolan’s family are calling for a federal review of the investigation. The Congressional Black Caucus has urged the Justice Department and FBI to examine the case, while officials have said the findings of the official investigation are expected to go before a grand jury.

There is still no definitive public explanation for Nolan’s death. An independent autopsy commissioned by his family listed the cause and manner of death as undetermined pending further investigation, while authorities continue their own investigation.
