What started as a normal summer day at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz County, California, quickly turned into a dramatic rescue when dangerous waves swept a 10-year-old boy into the ocean.

On July 25, 2026, powerful surf and strong currents created hazardous conditions along the coastline. Among those watching over beachgoers was Ryder, a 16-year-old rookie California State Parks lifeguard who was serving his first season on duty.
