Nearly six months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, investigators continue to face unanswered questions—particularly surrounding the mysterious ransom notes that surfaced during the high-profile case. A veteran criminal profiler now believes the messages may not be genuine, arguing that their tone is inconsistent with the brutal nature of the crime.

In the early hours of February 1, 2026, a masked intruder was captured on a Nest doorbell camera entering Nancy Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills. The suspect, described as a man of average height and build, wore a ski mask, black gloves, long sleeves, and carried a black Ozark Trail backpack commonly sold at Walmart. Authorities believe he forced the elderly woman from her bed during the home invasion, leaving behind blood at the front entrance.

Investigators later recovered the video with ᴀssistance from Google and the FBI. So far, only one suspect has been clearly identified on the footage. While authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional accomplices, no other individuals have been seen on camera.

In the days that followed, several alleged ransom messages emerged. The first demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin, included a payment ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, and reportedly referenced details from the crime scene that had not yet been publicly disclosed. However, it offered no proof that Nancy was still alive.

A later message, reportedly sent to multiple media outlets, took a dramatically different approach. It claimed Nancy had died accidentally following the abduction and stated that she had been “buried with nature.”

Veteran criminal profiler John Kelly, president of STALK Inc., told Fox News Digital that he strongly doubts the notes are authentic.

“Bottom line is, I don’t believe they’re real,” Kelly said.
According to Kelly, the first message was focused entirely on money, while the second suddenly introduced emotional language—something he believes is completely out of character for someone capable of carrying out such a violent crime.

He explained that offenders who invade an elderly woman’s home, drag her from her bed, and leave behind a bloody scene are typically detached and focused only on escaping.

“Most of these guys are psycho,” Kelly said. “They’re going to want to get away from the problem as quick as possible. They’re not going to be worried about leaving condolences.”
Kelly also argued that the suspect likely viewed Nancy as an object rather than a person, making the emotional wording in the later note seem especially inconsistent. After reviewing the available surveillance footage, he pointed to the suspect’s unusually calm demeanor, noting a lack of visible anxiety or even normal blinking—traits he ᴀssociates with psychopathic behavior.

Authorities have never officially confirmed whether the ransom notes are genuine. Early in the investigation, however, they appeared to treat at least some of the communications as credible. FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke even recorded a video response alongside Nancy’s adult children after the first ransom demand.

Nancy’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, co-host of NBC’s Today, has also said she believes the two notes received directly by the family were authentic, while acknowledging that many other messages were likely hoaxes.

During a March 2026 interview with Hoda Kotb, Savannah said:

“There are a lot of different notes… most of them are not real… But I believe the two notes that we received, that we responded to, I tend to believe those are real.”
Since then, investigators have confirmed that several fake ransom notes were circulated. At least one individual has already pleaded guilty to federal charges after sending a fraudulent ransom demand that harᴀssed Nancy’s family.

Despite those developments, investigators continue to examine whether the original communications were connected to a genuine kidnapping-for-ransom—or whether another motive is behind the case.

As of late July 2026, the investigation has entered its sixth month without any publicly announced major breakthroughs. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI continue to describe the case as active and ongoing.

On July 27, Savannah Guthrie released another emotional video appeal, pleading directly with those responsible to “make the right choice” and help bring her mother home. It was one of several heartfelt public messages she has shared since the abduction.

A combined reward of more than $1.2 million remains available for information leading to the resolution of the case. Authorities continue to urge anyone with relevant information to contact the FBI or Tucson Crime Stoppers.
