When little Elliot was not even three months old, his mother, Elena, never imagined that a frightening trip to the hospital would become the beginning of a life-changing medical journey. 💔

On July 4, Elliot was hospitalized after doctors discovered that he was breathing extremely rapidly and his blood oxygen levels were dangerously low. Despite extensive testing, including DNA testing and a biopsy, doctors initially couldn’t determine what was wrong.

Eventually, Elliot was diagnosed with an extremely rare lung condition called neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia.

He spent more than eight months in the hospital, was intubated twice and eventually needed a tracheostomy so he could receive continuous support from a ventilator and supplemental oxygen. He also required a feeding tube for nutrition. 🏥💙

When Elliot finally came home, his medical journey was far from over.

He still couldn’t breathe independently and needed a ventilator around the clock. His home became filled with the equipment necessary to keep him safe — including a ventilator, oxygen generator and humidifier operating 24 hours a day.

Then, a recent sleep study raised new concerns.

Instead of needing less breathing support as doctors might expect with his previous diagnosis, Elliot was found to require even greater ventilator pressure.

Once again, his family was left searching for answers.

Doctors still don’t know exactly what is causing his breathing difficulties, and further testing has been delayed after Elliot developed a fever.

For Elena, caring for her son has become a full-time commitment. Because Elliot requires constant medical support, she has been unable to work, and her savings have now run out.

Even basic expenses such as rent, electricity and phone bills have become difficult to manage. The family’s electricity costs are particularly high because Elliot’s medical equipment must remain running continuously.

Her greatest fear is that she may no longer be able to keep their home.
