What should have been an unimaginable loss turned into an extraordinary medical mystery for the family of 18-month-old Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino in Arizona. 💔🙏

On February 8, Vincent was found face-down in his family’s swimming pool. A relative immediately attempted CPR, and the little boy was rushed to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. 🏥

At approximately 6:20 p.m., a doctor pronounced Vincent deceased.

But investigators later reported that they noticed what appeared to be breathing or airflow from the child even after the pronouncement. A nurse reportedly believed the movements were agonal breathing related to the resuscitation efforts.

Vincent was then taken to a hospital morgue.

Nearly six hours after he had been pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, medical examiner personnel arrived at around 11:52 p.m. — and made an astonishing discovery.

Vincent was still breathing. 😳💙

His family was immediately notified, and he was transported by helicopter to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for continued treatment.

Remarkably, Vincent survived.

According to a fundraiser created for his family, he has required ventilator support, intensive medical care and rehabilitation, although the family says he avoided severe brain injury. The circumstances surrounding the incident are now under investigation by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Police have also recommended that prosecutors consider possible child-endangerment charges involving Vincent’s parents, citing allegations about supervision and possible substance use. These remain allegations, not established facts.

Meanwhile, the hospital has confirmed that it launched an internal investigation into what it described as a deeply distressing situation. Its findings have not been publicly released.

For Vincent’s family, however, the focus is now on his recovery.
