The University of Washington community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Juniper Blessing, whose death has deeply affected students, faculty, and residents across Seattle.

According to authorities, Christopher Leahy, 31, has been formally charged with first-degree murder and a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly weapon enhancement in connection with Juniper’s death. The charges were announced by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on May 18.

If convicted, Leahy could face between 22 and 28 years in prison.

Investigators allege that Juniper was attacked on May 10 while doing laundry at an off-campus apartment complex near the University of Washington. Court documents state that Juniper suffered more than 40 stab wounds during the incident.

Officials described Juniper as an innocent young student whose life was tragically cut short during an ordinary daily activity.

According to charging documents, investigators used surveillance footage and digital tracking data to place the suspect in areas around the university before and after the incident. Authorities also reported that he had allegedly attempted to enter private residences in Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood.

Witness statements and security footage suggest the suspect may have followed other individuals at the apartment complex before encountering Juniper.

At this time, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has stated that investigators have found no evidence indicating that the crime was motivated by hate. Officials added that if additional evidence emerges during the investigation, further charges could be considered.

Leahy is scheduled to appear for arraignment at the King County Courthouse.
