💙 FROM A SIMPLE ILLNESS TO A FIGHT FOR HIS FUTURE: FRANKI’S REMARKABLE JOURNEY BACK
For 11-year-old Franki, an ordinary childhood illness quickly became a medical emergency that changed his life forever.
His family had no idea that the symptoms they were watching at home could lead to such a devastating turn.
In March 2024, Franki had already been dealing with a chest infection for around five weeks. At first, his family hoped that rest and treatment would eventually help him recover. But then new and alarming symptoms appeared.
Franki developed pain in his leg, lost his appeтιтe and developed a high temperature.
That night, he went to bed hoping he would feel better by morning.
Instead, his mother Martine Purdy woke to a scene she would never forget.
When she checked on her son, Franki was sitting on the edge of his bed. His fingers were bent backward, his eyes were partially closed and he was making an unusual murmuring sound.
Martine tried to wake him, but he was barely responsive.
“I couldn’t rouse him,” she later recalled. “It was like he was on a different planet.”
Franki was rushed to hospital by ambulance. Doctors soon discovered the seriousness of what was happening inside his body.
He had developed a rare and life-threatening form of bacterial meningitis known as meningoencephalitis, together with sepsis. Doctors believed the infection may have begun with his earlier chest infection before spreading to his brain.
By the time he reached hospital, Franki had already experienced seizures, a collapsed right lung and a stroke.
His condition was extremely critical.
Doctors placed him into an induced coma while medical teams worked to stabilize him. For his mother and father, Luke, watching their young son connected to machines was an experience filled with fear and uncertainty.
Franki remained in hospital for around a month, with his parents staying close by and hoping for signs of improvement. 🙏
Eventually, the most critical stage pᴀssed — but his journey was far from over.
The illness had affected Franki’s brain and body, leaving him with an enormous rehabilitation challenge.
He had to relearn how to walk.
He had to relearn how to speak.
He had to relearn how to eat and swallow.
For a child who had once moved through everyday life without thinking about these abilities, even the smallest progress became a major milestone.
For Martine and Luke, every improvement was something to celebrate. ❤️
Today, Franki is 13 years old.
His story remains a powerful reminder of how quickly meningitis can transform a family’s world — but also of the extraordinary strength that can emerge during the darkest moments.
Franki’s journey is not simply about what he endured. It is about every step he has taken since, every ability he has fought to regain, and every reason his family has found to keep hoping. 💙🙏
