What was supposed to be a peaceful family vacation in Maine ended in an unimaginable tragedy.

Six-year-old Lucy Morgan was spending time with her parents and siblings at a rental cottage in Limerick, Maine, on June 1, 2024.

Her older siblings were playing badminton in the yard when, according to Maine State Police, the racket suddenly came apart.

The aluminum shaft separated from the wooden handle and flew through the air, striking Lucy in the head and penetrating her skull. 💔

Lucy was rushed to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Despite the efforts of doctors, she died four days later, on June 5, 2024.

She was only six years old.

Her family had been enjoying what should have been a happy final day of vacation. Instead, they were left facing every parent’s worst nightmare.

Even more heartbreaking, Lucy’s three siblings reportedly witnessed the accident, while her parents heard her scream and immediately rushed to her side. According to the family’s lawsuit, the experience caused severe emotional distress for the children.

Now, more than two years later, Lucy’s family is seeking answers.

They have filed a wrongful-death and product-liability lawsuit against Franklin Sports, the Mᴀssachusetts-based company that manufactured the badminton set.

The family alleges that the racket was defective and dangerously designed.

According to the lawsuit, the handle and metal shaft were not adequately secured, the adhesive connecting the pieces was defective or insufficient, and the racket lacked a secondary safety mechanism that could have prevented the metal shaft from becoming a projectile if the connection failed. The family also alleges that consumers were not properly warned about the potential danger.

Their attorneys say they want accountability — not only for Lucy, but to prevent another family from experiencing the same kind of tragedy.

The lawsuit also alleges that Franklin Sports had previously been aware of another incident involving a racket separating, in which a child in New York reportedly lost an eye. The company has not admitted liability and has declined to comment on the specific allegations because litigation is pending.

For Lucy’s father, Jesse Morgan, the loss has been carried alongside his family’s faith.

After Lucy’s death, a friend returned her backpack to the family. Inside was a prayer journal she had received only about a month earlier.

The journal contained drawings and Bible-related notes, something her father described as one of the most beautiful gifts they received in the middle of their grief.

Lucy should have had years ahead of her.

More birthdays.

More family vacations.

More games in the yard.

More ordinary childhood moments that families often take for granted.

Instead, her family now carries memories of a little girl whose life ended in a split second during what should have been a carefree afternoon. 💔
