For Michelle and Tom, raising twin toddlers already meant a home filled with sleepless nights, busy routines, and the endless demands of caring for two little girls.

But nothing could have prepared them for what happened in March 2024.

Their daughter Rowan was just 19 months old when she began experiencing unexplained symptoms. For months, her mother worried that something more serious might be happening, but the individual symptoms were initially thought to be common childhood illnesses.

Then Rowan became so sick that she needed to be hospitalized.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis, or LCH.

LCH is a rare disorder in which abnormal immune cells can build up in different parts of the body, potentially causing lesions and tissue damage. Treatment can include chemotherapy.

But before they could even process what was happening, their attention turned to Rowan’s twin sister, Annie.

Annie didn’t appear to be as seriously affected, but her parents had noticed recurring ear infections and an unusual rash.

After everything Rowan had gone through, they refused to ignore those signs.

Their fears were confirmed just 10 days later.

Suddenly, Michelle and Tom weren’t caring for one sick child.

Both of their little girls needed treatment.

The family had to reorganize almost every part of their lives around hospital visits, medications, monitoring, and the girls’ changing needs.

Both sisters began chemotherapy, with slightly different treatment schedules. Mondays became treatment days, while the rest of the week was filled with appointments, symptom monitoring, and visits from nurses.

Rowan spent about a month in the hospital after her diagnosis. Annie later needed hospital care after developing infections ᴀssociated with her treatment.

Both girls also had central lines placed to make receiving medication easier — but those lines brought another source of fear, because infections could become serious very quickly.

A fever that might normally seem like a minor childhood illness could suddenly mean an emergency trip to the hospital. 🏥😢

There were nights when one parent had to rush one daughter to the emergency department while the other stayed home with her twin.

And just when they thought they could see the finish line, their treatment plans were extended by another six months.

Without relatives living nearby, Michelle and Tom depended heavily on friends and extended family to help them through the hardest days.

Yet through the hospital stays, sleepless nights, frightening fevers, and months of uncertainty, one thing never changed:
