💔 PART 2: SHE CALLED MY MOTHER A MAID IN HER OWN HOME—THEN I FOUND THE DOCUMENTS THAT WOULD END HER LIE
What I discovered in the study changed everything.
Behind a stack of bills and old family pH๏τographs, I found a small black notebook tucked inside my late father’s desk. My mother’s name appeared on nearly every page, followed by dates, amounts of money, and short handwritten notes.
At first, I thought it was an ordinary household ledger.
Then I read the words beside one entry.
“Mother’s pension transferred. Vanessa’s personal account.”
My stomach тιԍнтened.
I turned another page.
And another.
There were records of my mother’s pension being withdrawn, money taken from her savings, and payments made for Vanessa’s shopping, beauty appointments, and expensive dinners.
My mother had been forced to sleep beside the laundry room while her own money paid for the luxury Vanessa displayed to her friends.
But that wasn’t the worst discovery.
Inside the notebook was a folded document bearing my mother’s signature. It appeared to authorize Brandon to manage her finances and make decisions about the property.
Something felt wrong.
My mother had always been careful with legal documents. She had taught me to read every line before signing anything.
I took pH๏τographs of the pages and slipped the notebook into my bag.
Then I heard footsteps.
I turned just as Brandon entered the study.
“What are you doing in here?”
“Looking for an old family pH๏τo.”
His eyes dropped to my bag.
“Stay out of things you don’t understand,” he muttered.
I stared at my older brother, the boy who had once promised to protect our mother after our father died.
“Is that what you’ve been telling Mom, too?”
His expression hardened.
“You’ve been gone six years. You don’t know what happens in this house.”
“Then explain the bruises on her arms.”
For one brief second, guilt crossed his face.
Then it vanished.
“Mom is clumsy. Vanessa gets frustrated. It’s a family matter.”
“A family matter?” I repeated. “You watched your wife hit our mother.”
Brandon stepped closer.
“Keep your voice down. Vanessa has important guests tonight. Don’t ruin everything.”
I looked at him and realized something heartbreaking.
My brother wasn’t unaware of what was happening.
He was choosing it.
“Fine,” I said quietly.
He seemed relieved.
That was his first mistake.
Because I had no intention of arguing with him again until I had the evidence needed to protect our mother.
By seven o’clock, the dining room looked like a magazine cover.
Crystal glᴀsses sparkled beneath the chandelier. Expensive food covered the table, and Vanessa moved among her guests wearing a designer dress and a smile that never reached her eyes.
My mother was still working.
She carried dishes from the kitchen, her shoulders hunched, her face pale.
When she paused to rest her trembling hands against the counter, Vanessa snapped her fingers.
“Don’t stand around. The guests are waiting!”
One of the women at the table glanced toward my mother.
“Is she your housekeeper?”
Vanessa laughed.
“Something like that. She’s Brandon’s mother, but she’s getting old and can’t manage on her own. We let her stay here because we feel sorry for her.”
My fork stopped halfway to my mouth.
My mother lowered her eyes.
Vanessa continued, growing more confident with every word.
“Honestly, this house would fall apart without me. I manage everything.”
Then she lifted her glᴀss.
“To the woman who keeps this family together!”
Her guests applauded.
I slowly placed my fork down.
“That’s interesting,” I said.
Vanessa turned toward me with an irritated smile.
“What’s interesting?”
“You keep saying this house belongs to you.”
“Because it does,” she replied sharply. “Brandon and I run this household. Your mother lives here because we allow it.”
I looked at my brother.
He stared at his plate.
Then I turned back to Vanessa.
“Are you absolutely certain you know who owns this property?”
Her smile тιԍнтened.
“Of course I do. Brandon and I have been living here for two years.”
“Living here isn’t the same as owning it.”
A few guests exchanged glances.
Vanessa let out a mocking laugh.
“Oh, please. You disappear overseas for six years, come home, and suddenly think you can tell us how to live?”
She pointed toward the kitchen.
“Your mother is the one who needs help. If you care so much, why don’t you take her away and look after her yourself?”
My mother appeared in the doorway.
“Please,” she whispered. “Let’s not fight.”
Vanessa turned on her.
“And you! Go back to the kitchen. Nobody asked for your opinion!”
My mother flinched.
That was when I stood.
“Don’t speak to her like that.”
Vanessa’s face reddened.
“Or what?”
I held her gaze.
“Or you’ll finally have to face the truth.”
She laughed again, but this time the sound was nervous.
“Brandon, control your sister.”
My brother finally looked up.
“Just leave it alone,” he told me.
I nodded slowly.
“All right.”
Then I reached into my bag and placed a thick folder on the dining table.
Vanessa frowned.
“What is that?”
“Something I should have shown you the moment I walked through the door.”
I opened the folder.
The first page was a property deed.
My name appeared clearly beneath the heading identifying the legal owner.
The room fell silent.
Vanessa stared at the document, then snatched it from the table.
“This is fake!”
“No,” I replied. “I purchased this house with my own money and placed the ownership in my name to ensure Mom would always have a safe home.”
I slid a second document toward her.
“And here’s the record showing that you and Brandon were allowed to stay here temporarily—not that you were given ownership.”
One guest quietly put down her wineglᴀss.
Vanessa’s fingers began to tremble.
“You can’t throw us out! Brandon is your brother!”
“I know exactly who Brandon is.”
I looked at him.
“And I know what he’s allowed to happen to our mother.”
His face went pale.
But before either of them could respond, I placed the pH๏τographed financial records beside the property deed.
“These are transfers from Mom’s account. Her pension. Her savings. Money she never agreed to give away.”
Vanessa glanced at the pages.
For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.
Then she did something I hadn’t expected.
She pointed at my mother.
“She gave us that money! Ask her!”
Every eye turned toward the elderly woman standing in the doorway.
My mother looked at the papers.
Her lips parted, but no words came out.
I walked to her and gently took her hand.
“Mom, you don’t have to protect anyone anymore. Just tell the truth.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was afraid,” she whispered.
Brandon sH๏τ to his feet.
“Mom, don’t!”
The entire table went still.
I turned toward him.
“Why are you afraid of telling the truth about money that belongs to you?”
He said nothing.
Then my mother reached into the pocket of her apron and pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day someone would ask.”
She handed it to me.
Inside was a letter written in my father’s handwriting, dated just weeks before he died.
I read the first two lines.
Then I looked at Brandon.
My brother’s face had gone completely white.
Because my father hadn’t merely left instructions about the house.
He had written down a secret about Brandon that could explain exactly why my brother had allowed his wife to mistreat our mother—and why they had been so desperate to keep me away.
I looked at my mother.
“Does Vanessa know what’s in this letter?”
Mom shook her head.
“No. But your brother does.”
Brandon lunged forward, reaching for the envelope.
I pulled it away.
“Don’t,” I warned.
For the first time in his life, my older brother looked at me not with anger, but with fear.
And then the doorbell rang.
Vanessa stared toward the entrance.
“Who invited them?”
I hadn’t invited anyone.
But when the front door opened, a woman stepped inside carrying a briefcase.
She introduced herself as the attorney who had handled my father’s estate.
Then she looked directly at Brandon.
“I’m sorry to interrupt dinner,” she said. “But after receiving the documents your sister sent me, I believe it’s time we discuss the inheritance your father left behind.”
She placed another folder on the table.
“And Mr. Brandon, there’s one question you need to answer before anyone leaves this house.”
“Why did you tell your mother that your father left you nothing when his will says something very different?”
Brandon’s mouth fell open.
Vanessa slowly turned toward her husband.
And my mother finally lifted her head.
Because the next secret wasn’t just about who owned the house. It was about who had been lying to this family for years—and who stood to lose everything when the truth came out.
