The investigation into the d#ath of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has reached a major legal milestone, but it has not answered every question surrounding his final hours.

A Jackson County grand jury in Mississippi unanimously returned a “no true bill,” meaning no one was indicted in connection with Nolan’s d#ath. The decision followed an extensive investigation involving witnesses, digital evidence, cellphone data, GPS information, pH๏τographs and video.

WHAT THE GRAND JURY FOUND

According to the grand jury report released by Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath, the panel found no credible evidence of criminal conduct by people who traveled to or from Horn Island with Nolan on July 4.

The 23-member grand jury heard from 43 witnesses and reviewed evidence obtained through 132 subpoenas.

The panel concluded that the position, condition, timing of discovery and location of Nolan’s b#dy were consistent with drowning.

However, that wording is important.

THE CAUSE OF D#ATH IS STILL UNDETERMINED

Both the Mississippi State Medical Examiner and an independent forensic pathologist hired by Nolan’s family determined that the cause and manner of d#ath remained undetermined.

The grand jury report described drowning as a “diagnosis of exclusion,” meaning other possible causes would need to be ruled out before drowning could be established with certainty.

The independent autopsy also identified injuries, including bruising to the back of Nolan’s head, but did not establish exactly how those injuries occurred or whether they contributed to his d#ath.

NOLAN’S FAMILY SAYS QUESTIONS REMAIN

Nolan’s family and their attorney, Ben Crump, have strongly disputed the idea that the grand jury decision provides a complete explanation of what happened.

Crump has argued that the “no true bill” does not resolve how Nolan entered the water or what happened immediately beforehand. His legal team has called for continued investigation and greater transparency surrounding the evidence.

At the same time, the grand jury’s decision means that no criminal charges will currently be brought against anyone in connection with Nolan’s d#ath.

THE CASE MAY NOT BE CLOSED FOREVER

A “no true bill” is not the same as a court finding that a crime could never have occurred. Mississippi Today reported that if credible new evidence emerges, the matter could be presented to a grand jury again.

For now, the official picture remains complicated:

No one has been indicted.
The grand jury found no credible evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
The circumstances were considered consistent with possible drowning.
But Nolan Wells’ official cause and manner of d#ath remain undetermined.

For his family, those unanswered questions continue to matter.

Nolan was only 18 when he disappeared during a July 4 trip to Horn Island. His b#dy was discovered two days later, beginning an investigation that has since drawn national attention.

The grand jury has now spoken on the question of criminal charges — but the question of exactly what happened to Nolan remains unresolved.
