💔 A Mother’s Seventh Cancer Battle Begins Again as Her Daughter Starts College

For Jessica, the words “you have cancer” are nothing new. But hearing them for the seventh time has brought a new level of fear, uncertainty, and heartbreak for the East Texas mother of four.

Jessica recently received news she had been dreading. Three separate areas in her mouth were biopsied, and all three were found to contain cancer. Doctors identified squamous cell carcinoma in two areas and verrucoid squamous in another.

The news comes only months after Jessica underwent treatment for another recurrence.

Her journey has already been extraordinarily difficult. Since her first diagnosis, Jessica has endured 27 surgeries, radiation, chemotherapy, jaw reconstruction, and repeated recurrences of oral cancer. Her latest cancer was removed in May, but it has now returned.

Jessica previously shared her story with supporters who rallied around her with prayers and encouragement. At that time, she had already heard the words “you have cancer” six times.

Now, she faces another uncertain chapter.

Jessica says her greatest fear is that treatment options may be becoming limited. Her previous chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments were unsuccessful, and doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston are now exploring clinical trials and other possible approaches.

Because Jessica has already undergone so many procedures, there are also limits to how much additional tissue can safely be removed. She is preparing for another major surgery in early September, which she expects could last between eight and ten hours.

Yet before facing that difficult procedure, Jessica has one deeply meaningful moment ahead.

She is taking her daughter, Kaydin, to college. 🎓❤️

Kaydin was only 10 years old when her mother was first diagnosed. Now, years later, she is beginning college to pursue a nursing degree. Her dream is to one day return to MD Anderson and work in the head and neck division that has cared for her mother.

It is a powerful reflection of the bond between a mother and daughter.

Kaydin grew up watching her mother navigate an unimaginable journey. Instead of allowing that experience to define her through fear, she chose a path centered on helping others.

Next week, after helping Kaydin settle into college, Jessica will return to MD Anderson for another round of testing, including a PET scan, CT scan, and blood work.

After that, another difficult chapter begins.

Through it all, Jessica says the prayers and encouragement from people around her have helped carry her through some of her darkest moments. They have also given her the strength to continue raising awareness about oral cancer.

Now, her family is asking for that support once again. 🙏

They are hoping the upcoming scans bring the answers they desperately need. They are praying doctors discover another path forward. And they are asking for strength for the medical team preparing for Jessica’s next major procedure.

For now, a mother and daughter stand at two very different starting lines.
