Iryna Zarutska was only 23 years old when her life was suddenly taken while riding Charlotte’s Lynx Blue Line on August 22, 2025.

She had come to the United States from Ukraine after fleeing the war, hoping to build a safer future. Instead, a routine train journey home ended in tragedy.

💔 A TRAGIC ATTACK ON THE TRAIN

According to federal prosecutors, surveillance footage showed Iryna entering the train and sitting in front of Decarlos Brown Jr. Investigators allege that several minutes later, Brown attacked her from behind.

Iryna suffered f#tal injuries and d#ied at the scene. Brown was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree mu#der by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS CRIMINAL HISTORY

The case also drew national attention because of Brown’s previous encounters with the criminal-justice system.

According to court records and law-enforcement officials, Brown had been charged 14 times previously, including cases involving larceny, breaking and entering and robbery with a dangerous we#pon. He had served prison time for robbery with a dangerous we#pon before his release in 2020.

Those facts have prompted widespread questions about how the system handled his previous cases and why he was free at the time of the attack.

🕊️ IRYNA’S LIFE SHOULD NOT BE REDUCED TO THE CASE

Beyond the court filings and headlines was a young woman who had left a country at war and was trying to create a new life.

Her story has continued to resonate with people far beyond Charlotte, particularly among Ukrainians and others who saw in her journey the hope of starting again somewhere safe.

Federal prosecutors later brought a separate federal charge against Brown related to the attack on public transportation. The indictment states that he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Iryna’s name is more than a headline.

She was 23 years old.
She had a future ahead of her.
