🏈💔 From Football Practice to a Cancer Diagnosis: 11-Year-Old Xavier Begins a Fight His Family Never Expected

One evening, 11-year-old Xavier was thinking about football.

By the following morning, his family was facing a reality they never imagined would become part of their lives.

Around 5 a.m., Xavier’s mother, Jessica, says doctors delivered devastating news after a series of medical visits for what initially appeared to be a sports-related problem.

Her son had cancer.

The San Antonio-area family is now preparing for a long medical journey after doctors confirmed that Xavier has lymphoma, although additional pathology testing is still needed to determine the exact type.

The story began in July when Xavier started experiencing pain in his leg.

At the time, the family believed it could be sciatica or another sports-related issue. Xavier had recently begun his fourth and final season with the Comfort Youth Football League before moving on to middle school football.

He was excited about the season and had been working hard.

During one practice, however, Xavier experienced significant cramping, and his coach noticed what appeared to be a knot near his hip.

Over the following days, the discomfort continued.

Jessica took him to an emergency room, where she says the family was initially told the problem could be related to stretching or possibly a sports hernia. They returned home without imaging.

When the symptoms continued, the family sought additional medical care.

Then Jessica noticed something that made her increasingly concerned.

Xavier’s right leg had become noticeably larger than his left.

She took him back to the emergency room and pushed for additional testing.

This time, doctors ordered more extensive imaging.

Around 5 a.m., Jessica says a physician entered the room and told her, “I have some answers.”

The CT scan had revealed multiple mᴀsses in Xavier’s pelvis, along with hematomas. Doctors became concerned that lymphoma could be involved and recommended an immediate transfer to a pediatric hospital for specialized hematology and oncology care.

Jessica says she was overwhelmed by the news.

“I fell to my knees,” she recalled.

Xavier was transferred to CHRISTUS Children’s in San Antonio, where specialists continued investigating the cause of his symptoms.

Further imaging revealed another mᴀss in his chest, located between his rib cage and heart. Doctors explained that its position helped explain why the earlier chest X-ray had not clearly shown it.

A biopsy was performed, and the family subsequently received confirmation that the mᴀsses were related to cancer.

Doctors are now awaiting additional pathology results to identify the precise type of lymphoma Xavier is facing.

For Jessica and her husband, Robert, the experience has been especially difficult because only days earlier, their son had been focused on football.

Now, he is undergoing medical procedures to prepare for treatment, including placement of a chemotherapy port, a bone marrow biopsy, and a spinal tap.

Once doctors have the information they need, the family expects treatment to begin quickly.

Despite the frightening changes, Jessica says Xavier continues to show remarkable strength.

His friends and football coach have helped keep his spirits up, providing reminders of the life he had just been living before the diagnosis changed everything. 💙

Because of the amount of school he is expected to miss during hospitalization and treatment, Xavier has also been withdrawn from Comfort Middle School for the time being.

His mother now hopes their experience can encourage other parents to listen carefully when something about their child’s health does not feel right.

“Don’t dismiss your child’s pain if you feel something. Advocate for your child regardless,” she said.

Jessica describes her son as a fighter.

“He is so strong.”

For now, Xavier’s family is asking for prayers as doctors work to identify the exact lymphoma and determine the best treatment plan.

They are praying for clear answers, strength through treatment, and a future in which their son can return to the things he loves.

Because Xavier should be thinking about football, friends, school, and being an 11-year-old—not spending his days in a hospital.
