PRICHARD, ALABAMA — Hiawayi Robinson was eight years old in September 2014, an age when birthdays, family promises and small moments of excitement can mean everything.

She was described by relatives as a bright and trusting child who loved affection and believed in the people around her.

On September 16, Hiawayi spoke by phone with her father, Hiawatha Robinson Jr. According to the account presented in the case, the conversation lasted approximately 17 minutes. During the call, her father reportedly promised her $150 for her upcoming birthday and arranged to meet her.

For Hiawayi, the promise was exciting. Her birthday was approaching, and she trusted her father.

Later that afternoon, surveillance footage captured the eight-year-old entering a local convenience store at approximately 4 p.m. She appeared calm and showed no obvious indication that anything was wrong.

It would become the last confirmed sighting of her.

When Hiawayi failed to return home, her grandmother, who was caring for her, became increasingly concerned. Family members hoped she might simply have gone somewhere nearby or lost track of time.

But as the hours pᴀssed without any word from the child, those hopes disappeared.

Authorities were contacted, and a search began.

Two days later, on September 18, a city worker made a discovery in an open field near Rebel Road, less than a mile from Hiawayi’s home.

The discovery brought the search to a devastating end.

Investigators identified the child as Hiawayi and began working to determine what had happened between her disappearance and the discovery of her remains. Evidence from the location and subsequent examination indicated that her death was not accidental.

Investigators then focused closely on the people who had been in contact with Hiawayi before she disappeared.

Surveillance footage helped establish a timeline, while investigators traced a vehicle connected to the area back to her father. Additional evidence gathered during the investigation further connected Hiawatha Robinson Jr. to the case.

Federal and local authorities worked together as investigators built the case.

Robinson Jr. was arrested and charged in connection with Hiawayi’s death. Prosecutors presented evidence concerning the circumstances surrounding the child’s final hours and argued that the events leading to her death involved an ᴀssault.
