More than six months after 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson home, investigators are still searching for answers. Nancy, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen in late January, and authorities believe she was taken against her will.

Now, the region’s monsoon season may have unexpectedly changed the landscape around Nancy’s neighborhood. 🌧️

A nearby resident reported seeing FBI agents searching the desert brush behind Nancy’s home in late July, shortly before the six-month mark of her disappearance. A spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, however, said task-force investigators had not recently returned to the area.

So why would investigators potentially search the same area again?

Retired Pima County Sheriff’s Department lieutenant Bob Krygier suggested there could be several explanations — including the possibility of a new lead or new information directing investigators toward a specific location.

But he also pointed to something much more unpredictable:

Heavy rainfall can dramatically alter Tucson’s desert terrain. Fast-moving water can shift rocks, branches and other debris, potentially exposing objects or areas that were previously difficult to see or access.

That possibility has renewed a small measure of hope that the changing landscape could help investigators uncover something that may have previously gone unnoticed.

Nancy’s disappearance remains unresolved, with no publicly identified suspect and no confirmed information about her whereabouts. Her family has continued to appeal for answers, while Savannah has repeatedly urged anyone with information to come forward.

For a family that has spent more than half a year waiting for answers, even the possibility of a new clue can mean everything. 💔🙏
