❤️ “MOM”: THE TWO SYLLABLES THAT GAVE MAYA’S FAMILY NEW HOPE AFTER SIX MONTHS
‼️ Doctors once believed 12-year-old Maya Edmonds might not survive the night. Six months later, her mother heard the word she had been praying for every single day.
💔 After four brain surgeries and a journey filled with heartbreaking setbacks, Maya is slowly finding pieces of herself again.
❤️ Then she looked at her mom and said: “Mom.”
For Cia Edmonds, it was only one word.
But after everything her family has endured, it meant the world.
Maya was critically injured during a school mᴀss shooting six months ago. Doctors initially did not believe she would survive the night. Somehow, she did.
Survival, however, was only the beginning.
Maya faced serious infections, including MRSA in her lungs, meningitis in her brain, swelling, fluid leaking from her skull, and four brain surgeries.
For her mother, there were moments when it was difficult to know what the future would look like.
Cia once described the painful reality of grieving while still looking directly at her daughter.
She was watching Maya fight to survive while also mourning the abilities and personality that had once come so naturally to her.
By April, Maya had left the ICU and was becoming more aware of what was happening around her. Her mother said she was making progress beyond expectations, but the emotional journey remained incredibly difficult.
Then, in June, encouraging changes began appearing.
Maya learned to communicate using yes-and-no ʙuттons and an app on her iPad. Her reactions became more deliberate. Her familiar little smirk returned.
And slowly, her personality began showing itself again. ❤️
An eye roll.
A sarcastic response.
Even playful moments between mother and daughter that reminded Cia of the girl she knew before the shooting.
“She cries because she wants to go home,” Cia shared.
That heartbreaking sentence captures just how aware Maya has become. She understands that she is still in the hospital, still fighting through a recovery that no one can predict with certainty.
But alongside the heartbreak have come moments of incredible hope.
Cia says Maya’s awareness is remarkable. She is seeing fragments of the daughter she remembers begin to emerge again.
“I see fragments of her blossoming into a version of her former self,” Cia said.
Then came the moment she had been praying for.
Maya spoke.
“Mom.”
For Cia, those two syllables carried months of hope, fear, exhaustion, and love.
“I prayed for this day, every day for months,” she said.
Maya’s journey is far from finished. She remains in the hospital and continues to face setbacks, limitations, and difficult questions about what abilities she may eventually regain.
But Cia says something has changed in her tears.
They are no longer only tears of grief.
They are tears of pride.
Of familiarity.
Of awe.
“Tears of awe as I watch her crawl out of the rubble that her mind lives in.”
Now, the family is hoping for more.
More words.
More movement.
More pieces of Maya’s personality.
And, eventually, the moment they have been waiting for most of all.
The day Cia can look at her daughter and say the words she has been promising her all along:
“You’re going home.” ❤️🙏🕊️
