Yorkshire Wildlife Park Reopens After William Chapman Tragedy as Visitors Return to See Altai the Tiger

Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster reopened its gates on October 16, six days after 24-year-old William Chapman died after entering a tiger enclosure. The reopening brought visitors back to the attraction, where emotions remained mixed as the public reflected on the tragedy and the staff continued to deal with its aftermath.

The park reopened all areas, including its Land of the Tigers habitat, after discussions with relevant authorities. Visitors arriving on the first day expressed sympathy for the park’s staff and acknowledged that the attraction would eventually need to resume operations. Some came to see the animals, while others said they wanted to support the park during a difficult period.

Altai the Tiger Remains at the Park

Much of the public attention has focused on Altai, the five-year-old Amur tiger involved in the incident. The park confirmed that the animal was safe and would not be euthanised as a result of what happened.

When visitors returned, Altai was seen resting on a wooden platform inside the enclosure. Staff continued to prioritise the welfare of the animals while asking visitors to treat employees with understanding and respect.

The park also confirmed that specialist support was being provided to staff affected by the incident.

Investigations Continue

Chapman entered the enclosure on October 10 after climbing over two fences, according to evidence presented at the opening of the inquest. An initial post-mortem examination found that he had sustained multiple traumatic injuries.

The inquest, overseen by Senior Coroner Nicola Mundy, was adjourned until March 18, 2027. Investigations are also being conducted by Doncaster Council into health and safety arrangements at the park, while Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust is examining concerns raised by the family about his contact with mental health services.

The investigations have not yet established all the circumstances surrounding the incident, and important questions remain unanswered.

For now, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is operating again while the inquiries continue. The reopening marks a return to normal operations for the attraction, but for William Chapman’s loved ones and the staff affected, the consequences of the tragedy remain deeply personal.
