When 16-year-old Corion Evans witnessed a vehicle plunge off a boat ramp into the Pascagoula River in Moss Point, Mississippi, he stepped up in a big way.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., leaving three teenage girls stranded inside the vehicle as it drifted from the bank and started going under.

According to police reports, the driver explained that her navigation system directed her into the waterway without warning.
Evans jumped into action immediately. Leaving his phone behind, he shed his shirt and shoes before swimming out to the victims, who had scrambled onto the car’s roof.
During the rescue, responding police officer Garry Mercer began to sink while pulling one girl toward land. Evans quickly swam back to rescue the officer as well.
Thanks to his quick thinking, everyone survived, and city officials later awarded both Evans and Mercer commendations for their heroic actions.
