Vitória, 6, was born with a large haemangioma on her face, a visible birthmark caused by a growth of blood vessels.

Her mother, Rose Vasconcelos Esteves, and father, Leonan, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have spoken about the emotional challenges their daughter faced while growing up with a noticeable difference.

According to her family, Vitória once became so upset after seeing her reflection that she avoided looking in the mirror. She had begun noticing that her appearance was different from that of her younger sister, Alice, and other family members.

For a young child, understanding why she looks different can be difficult. Her family’s support has focused on helping Vitória feel comfortable with herself and reminding her that her appearance does not define who she is.

Her story is a reminder that children with visible differences may need not only medical care, but also patience, reᴀssurance, and a strong support system as they grow in confidence.
