Toddler’s Brave Leukemia Battle Inspires a Community to Rally Around Her

Just weeks before her second birthday in August 2024, Abby’s parents believed their daughter was simply fighting off another daycare illness. She had low-grade fevers, seemed unusually tired, and nothing suggested anything more serious.
But after several visits to the pediatrician, blood tests at Texas Children’s Hospital revealed devastating news—Abby had leukemia.
“We never imagined it was cancer,” her mother, Jen, recalled. “It was shocking and overwhelming.”
Within an hour of receiving the diagnosis, Abby was admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital, where she immediately began treatment. After surgeries to place treatment ports, she started chemotherapy while her mother left her job to care for her full-time.

Throughout the difficult journey, Abby’s biggest supporter was her 5-year-old brother, Connor. Their close bond brought comfort to the entire family, and a touching video of Connor visiting Abby in the hospital quickly captured hearts online.
Child life specialists also helped Abby and Connor navigate the challenges of cancer treatment. Abby often practiced medical procedures on her stuffed animals, turning play into a way to cope with her own hospital experiences.
Despite everything she faced, Abby never lost her bright spirit. Her family adopted the motto “Happy Like Abby,” reminding themselves to find joy even during the hardest days.

When Abby’s third birthday arrived while she was still medically isolated, her parents hoped to make the day special. Knowing how much she loved dogs, they posted a simple request on their neighborhood Facebook page, asking if a few people would walk their dogs past their home.
Instead, more than 100 neighbors, along with local police officers and firefighters, showed up with their dogs to celebrate Abby’s birthday, creating an unforgettable parade of love and support.
“We thought maybe five people would come,” her father, Mike, said. “Instead, the whole community came together for Abby.”
Today, Abby has completed the most intensive phase of her leukemia treatment and is now in maintenance therapy, which includes regular checkups, blood tests, and chemotherapy at home. Her strength continues to amaze her family. Just months ago she struggled to run, and now she’s enjoying gymnastics, hoping to start dance classes, and eagerly preparing to become a big sister.
Looking back, Abby’s parents credit the team at Texas Children’s Hospital for guiding them through every step of the journey.
Their message to other families facing a childhood cancer diagnosis is simple: take one day at a time, accept help when it’s offered, and never lose hope.
Through courage, resilience, and the kindness of an entire community, Abby continues to prove that even the smallest fighters can inspire the biggest acts of love.
