“THE PITCH WILL NEVER BE THE SAME WITHOUT HIM” — FOOTBALL CLUB PAYS EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE TO JACKSON DUKE AFTER RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY

For Jackson Duke, football was more than just a game. It was a part of his life, a place where he built friendships and shared special moments with teammates who are now facing the heartbreaking loss of someone they considered part of their football family.
The 17-year-old was a player for Hebburn Town Juniors FC’s Under-18s team. Following the River Wear tragedy in Sunderland, the club released an emotional tribute remembering Jackson as a much-loved member of its community.

“Jackson was part of our football family,” the club said, adding that his loss would be deeply felt by teammates, coaches, friends and everyone who knew him.
The message also expressed the club’s condolences to Jackson’s family and loved ones, while urging everyone to focus on supporting one another during an incredibly difficult time.
A TRAGEDY THAT HAS LEFT THREE FAMILIES GRIEVING
Jackson was among three teenagers who lost their lives after a black Audi A3 entered the River Wear near Panns Bank and Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland shortly before 1:30 p.m. on September 29, 2026.
The other two teenagers were Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16. Their families have also shared tributes, remembering the young people they loved and the memories they will always carry.
The incident has deeply affected the local community, including friends, classmates and people connected to the teenagers through football and other activities.
THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Northumbria Police confirmed that a fourth occupant, a 17-year-old boy, reached safety and sustained injuries described as non-serious.
The teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released on bail while inquiries continued. Police have said they are still investigating the circumstances of the incident and working to establish who was driving the car.
Authorities have urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances, out of respect for the families and the ongoing investigation.
A YOUNG PLAYER WHO WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN
For Jackson’s teammates at Hebburn Town Juniors, the loss is deeply personal. They are mourning not simply a footballer, but a friend and a member of their team whose presence had become part of their shared experience.
The matches will continue, but Jackson’s absence will be felt by those who knew him. The club’s tribute made clear that he will always remain part of its football family.
At just 17, Jackson had many possibilities ahead of him. Now, those who knew him are holding on to their memories and supporting one another through an unimaginable period of grief.
