The Night Two Young Brothers Lost Their Mother: The Sara Tokars Case 🕯️

They were only six and four years old.

Ricky and Mike Tokars were children who should have been thinking about toys, school and ordinary family life. Instead, on November 29, 1992, the two brothers became witnesses to a crime that would change their lives forever.

Their mother, 39-year-old Sara Tokars, had returned home to Marietta, Georgia, with her sons that evening.

According to prosecutors, a man named Curtis Rower was involved in a murder-for-hire plot connected to Sara’s husband, Fred Tokars, a prominent Atlanta attorney.

Rower reportedly forced Sara and her two children into their SUV and drove them to a secluded area.

The boys remained inside the vehicle when Sara was fatally attacked.

Then the gunman fled.

The two children were left alone.

Six-year-old Ricky somehow found the courage to act. He turned off the SUV, unbuckled his four-year-old brother and ran with him through the darkness toward a neighbor’s home.

A child barely old enough to understand what had happened was suddenly responsible for getting his little brother to safety.

The investigation that followed eventually revealed a disturbing alleged motive.

Sara had reportedly been preparing to divorce Fred and had discovered financial documents and information that investigators believed connected him to money laundering and a multimillion-dollar cocaine operation.

There was also a $1.75 million life-insurance policy taken out on Sara.

Prosecutors alleged that Fred recruited business ᴀssociate Eddie Lawrence, who then arranged for Rower to carry out the killing.

Investigators said the original plan was supposed to make Sara’s killing appear like a random robbery.

There was reportedly another instruction: the children were not supposed to be harmed or killed in front of their mother.

But that boundary was not followed.

Sara had also reportedly provided damaging documents concerning Fred’s activities to a private investigator before her death. Those materials later became an important part of the investigation into the alleged conspiracy.

The case eventually reached the courts.

Rower was sentenced to life without parole.

Lawrence pleaded guilty and testified against others involved in the case.

Fred Tokars was ultimately convicted on charges including racketeering, money laundering, drug conspiracy and malice murder. He received life sentences and remained incarcerated for the rest of his life.

Tokars died of natural causes in federal prison in May 2020.

But the legal outcome could never erase what happened to Sara or what her two young sons experienced that night.

Sara was only 39.

Ricky was six.

Mike was four.

For most people, the case would eventually become a name in a courtroom, a collection of evidence and a chapter in a history book.

For Ricky and Mike, it was something much more personal.

It was the night their mother never came home.

It was the night a six-year-old had to become brave enough to save his little brother.
