British toddler Madeleine McCann disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on 3 May 2007 when she was just three years old. The case has remained one of the world’s most high-profile unsolved mysteries for nearly two decades.

In early June 2025, Portuguese and German police launched a new joint search operation in the Algarve region. Investigators focused on land around a cottage previously linked to the main suspect, German national Christian Brueckner. Teams examined an abandoned building, undergrowth, wells and ditches using ground-penetrating radar capable of scanning up to 15 feet deep. The operation, requested by German prosecutors, involved around 25 German investigators and lasted several days but produced no publicly announced major breakthroughs.

Brueckner, whose mobile phone records placed him near the McCann family’s accommodation on the night of the disappearance, has always denied any involvement. German authorities have long considered him the prime suspect and stated in 2020 that they believed he was responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance. He has never been charged in connection with the case.

At the time of the 2025 search, Brueckner was serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz. He completed that sentence and was released from Sehnde prison in northern Germany on 17 September 2025. Upon release he was fitted with an electronic ankle monitor. His lawyers did not disclose his subsequent place of residence.

Throughout 2026 the investigation has continued with renewed intensity. In June and July 2026, British Metropolitan Police officers working under Operation Grange received a substantial dossier of files from German authorities. Reports describe the material as containing crucial additional information and evidence relating to Brueckner. Scotland Yard is actively exploring legal avenues to extradite him to the United Kingdom so he can face charges and stand trial for Madeleine’s abduction and suspected murder, with the aim of progressing the case before the 20th anniversary of her disappearance in May 2027.

Brueckner continues to deny any role in the disappearance. Differences between the German and British legal systems regarding the weight given to circumstantial evidence have so far prevented charges in Germany. British investigators remain determined to pursue every available lead.

Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have repeatedly restated their commitment to discovering the truth, emphasising that they will “leave no stone unturned.”

As of 25 July 2026, the case remains open. No charges have been brought against Brueckner in relation to Madeleine McCann, and her fate is still unknown.
