‼️ A MONTH OF QUESTIONS — TASIA FORTUNE’S DEATH RULED A HOMICIDE AS POLICE MAKE ARREST

For more than a month, the family of 29-year-old mother of four Tasia Fortune waited for answers after she was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant home in Jackson, Mississippi.

Now, investigators have confirmed that her death was officially ruled a homicide — and police have made an arrest.

Fortune was discovered on August 3 behind a vacant house in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in west Jackson.

The circumstances immediately raised questions for her family and the wider community.

On Thursday evening, Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced that the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office had determined Fortune’s death was a homicide.

By Friday, police announced that a man had been arrested.

Local media identified the suspect as Jacques Ratliff, who was reportedly taken into custody on Capitol Street Thursday night. Police said investigators had already obtained search and arrest warrants and were able to proceed after receiving the medical examiner’s determination.

But authorities made clear that the investigation is not finished.

“This case remains active and additional arrests will be pending,” Brackney said.

For Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, the arrest brought an emotional moment after weeks of uncertainty.

Spivey said she broke down when police told her someone had been arrested.

“I just started crying and told them ‘thank you, thank you, thank you,’” she told The ᴀssociated Press.

Even with an arrest, however, the family still does not have all the answers.

Spivey said authorities had not yet explained a possible motive or told her what evidence led investigators to the suspect.

The case had already attracted significant attention because Fortune was a Black woman found hanging from a tree in Mississippi, a setting that inevitably raised painful questions because of the state’s history of racial violence and lynching.

However, Fortune’s own mother said she did not believe her daughter’s death was racially motivated.

“I really don’t feel like it was a racial crime,” Spivey previously said. “I think that this was more of a personal crime.”

Spivey also remained adamant that her daughter had not taken her own life.

The last time she saw Tasia was in late July, when her daughter traveled to Kentucky for a family reunion. They went swimming, ate together and spent time as a family.

Spivey remembered her daughter as being in a good emotional place at the time.

“She was better than I had seen her in a long time. She was at peace,” she previously said.

Fortune’s life had included significant struggles. Her family said she spent time in foster care, ran away at 16 and eventually made her way to Mississippi. She experienced periods of homelessness and addiction, but relatives described her as loving and caring.

They said she repeatedly returned to Jackson in part because she wanted to remain close to her children.

She leaves behind four young children. 💔

Before Ratliff’s arrest, another man, 65-year-old Terence Anderson, had been questioned during the investigation and arrested on an unrelated charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Investigators said Anderson acknowledged arguing with Fortune but denied involvement in her death. He has not been charged in connection with Fortune’s death.

Now, more than a month after Tasia was found, her family finally has confirmation of something her mother had maintained from the beginning: her daughter’s death was a homicide.

But an arrest does not answer every question.

Police have not publicly disclosed a motive or the complete circumstances surrounding Fortune’s death, and authorities have indicated that additional arrests could follow.

For Tasia’s family, the search for answers continues alongside the grief of losing a 29-year-old daughter and mother.

She was more than the circumstances of her death.

She was a daughter.

She was a sister.

She was a mother of four.

And her family spent weeks making sure her story would not be forgotten.
