Spicomellus: The “Spiky Monster” from Morocco That Completely Rewrites the History of Armoured Dinosaurs

Paleontologists have unveiled Spicomellus afer, the oldest and strangest ankylosaur ever discovered—and the very first found on the African continent. Excavated from 168-million-year-old Middle Jurᴀssic rocks in Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains, this armoured dinosaur possessed a defensive system so alien it could have been designed by science fiction: long, conical spikes fused directly to its rib bones.

In every other known armoured dinosaur, osteoderms sit embedded in the skin, separate from the skeleton. Spicomellus breaks that fundamental rule. Its terrifying spikes grew straight out of the ribs, creating a rigid, living fortress unlike anything in the vertebrate fossil record. “When we first saw it, we thought it must be a fake,” said Dr. Susannah Maidment of the Natural History Museum, London. “No animal has ever done this before.”

At roughly 3–4 metres long, the creature was a low-slung herbivore that shared its world with early stegosaurs and sauropods. Its discovery proves ankylosaurs had already spread across both Laurasia and Gondwana by the Middle Jurᴀssic—long before they mysteriously vanished from southern continents.

The name Spicomellus (“spiky chain-mail”) captures its movie-monster appearance: a walking fortress bristling with rib-mounted spears. The find also highlights Morocco’s rising status as a paleontological H๏τspot and forces scientists to rethink how armoured dinosaurs evolved their defences.

After 168 million years, Spicomellus has emerged as one of the most alien-looking dinosaurs on record—a real-life creature that looks like it escaped from a Jurᴀssic blockbuster and completely redraws the ankylosaur family tree.
