A sensational headline claiming a 140-million-year-old Brachiosaurus bone was found on the Pacific floor off California is almost certainly exaggerated, but the underlying geology is real and well understood.
Brachiosaurus was a mᴀssive, long-necked sauropod that lived in western North America during the Late Jurᴀssic (~155–145 Ma). The Morrison Formation, where all confirmed specimens come from, represents ancient river floodplains and coastal plains hundreds of kilometers from the open ocean at the time.
Any bone reaching the deep Pacific would have followed the same path as the North Sea Plateosaurus and other “marine” dinosaur finds:
- The animal died near a river or coastal plain.
- Its carcᴀss was carried offshore by normal flooding or storms and sank into marine sediments.
- Over 140+ million years, continuous sedimentation and tectonic subsidence (as the Pacific Plate moved and the margin evolved) buried it under kilometers of water and sediment.
The Pacific seafloor off California includes ancient Jurᴀssic–Cretaceous crust and accreted terranes that once hosted coastal environments. Isolated dinosaur bones can occasionally be dredged or drilled from these settings, but never complete skeletons of deep-water animals—because dinosaurs never lived there.
