RJ Mitte, Breaking Bad Star and Disability Rights Advocate, Dies at 34

American actor RJ Mitte, widely recognized for his role as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on the landmark series Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34. He pᴀssed away on Monday, October 12, 2026, at his home in Brownsville, Texas. His representative later confirmed that he died by suicide.

Mitte’s publicist released a statement describing him as a “beloved actor, philanthropist, and pᴀssionate disability rights advocate.” Local authorities in Brownsville received an emergency call shortly before 1 p.m. local time. Officers found him already deceased, and no foul play is suspected. An investigation remains open.

Born Roy Frank Mitte III in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1992, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three. He moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and was cast at 14 as the son of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and Anna Gunn’s Skyler White. Drawing on his own lived experience, he portrayed the character across all five seasons of the Emmy-winning AMC drama from 2008 to 2013, appearing in 56 episodes. The performance earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble cast.

Beyond acting, Mitte became a prominent voice for disability inclusion. He served as an ambᴀssador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and he established The Mitte Foundation to support community programs while challenging stereotypes and promoting greater representation of people with disabilities in media and society.

Bryan Cranston, who played his on-screen father, shared a lengthy and emotional tribute on Instagram. Cranston wrote that he was in “deep despair” and recalled meeting Mitte when the younger actor was only 14. He praised Mitte’s determination, noting that he never allowed his condition to serve as an excuse and approached the demanding production schedule with enthusiasm. Cranston revealed the two had been texting only weeks earlier to arrange a lunch meeting. “It is especially devastating to hear that he took his own life,” Cranston said. “I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future… But I do know that I loved him… I’ll miss you, son.”

Other Breaking Bad cast members also expressed their grief. Aaron Paul stated he was heartbroken and reminded people that they are loved and not alone. Dean Norris said he had always looked out for Mitte on set and described him as a “sweetheart of a young man.”

Mitte had remained active in recent years, appearing in projects including The Recall and The Oak Room, and had been promoting new work shortly before his death. He became engaged to his longtime partner, Kennedy Suarez, in 2025.

His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes highlighting both his contribution to one of television’s most celebrated dramas and his lasting advocacy for people with disabilities.
